Storing Images

I am using an iMac with Aperature 3 and have maxed out my ibackup drive probably because of my photo files. In order to free up backup space, is it advisable to download these files to an offsite location like SmugMug or another site?

Only if you trust that site to keep them available for you in perpetuity, and to not compress the photos from their original size.
Better to get another backup drive. You should have two copies saved in two different locations, in case something happens to one or the other.

That brings up an interesting question: If I'm using Carbonite as a backup for all my computer files, do you know if they compress?

I very much doubt that they compress, but I don't know for certain.
Their site is specifically marketed as a backup, so they ought to be able to provide you with an exact copy of any file you send to them.
Photo sites may or may not do so. Best to find out before you use them.

What PP software do you use? LR has a one step solution to backup your files to a HD, but it still shows in LR. Awesome feature. Still looking for my perfect offsite backup solution.

@ blue-eagle_one ~ the 'PP' stands for "post-processing" and the 'LR' stands for "Lightroom." Hope this helped ya! :-)

@ shieldsadvert ~ A few months ago I bought a 2TB external hard drive from Staples to store all my photo work in. The computer tech also suggested storing everything from my main drive ["C"], initially. That way, my "C" drive is not bogged down with all the other stuff. i bought mine when it was on sale for $149.99. How many photos are you looking to store on the other location?

Probably about 1,500. Right now I have about 800, all taken with an 8MP camera, but I'm going to buy a 24MP camera soon.

I'm trying to figure out how much space a 36 megapixel camera shooting RAW will take up!! Do you delete the RAW image after you've processed it and converted to JPEG?

I just completed a full restore on my new computer, HP Pavilion, Windows 7 - 64 bit from a 32 bit running Vista Home Basic with everything restoring without being compressed. Just be sure you know what folders the pics are in with Carbonite
