Thank you Albuqshutterbug. I will try that on my next attempt, as well as trying it with my Canon t3i. Oddly, I get much better moon shots with my Nikon P510 bridge camera than with my Canon, even using the same settings. So my Nikon is my go-to camera for sky shots. My guess, from seeing some of the stellar shots of galaxies and astrophotography on this website, is that I probably need more extensive equipment as well as experience.

I've seen good reviews on this Canon so don't dismiss based on a few photos that didn't come out the way you wanted. Much of shooting Astrophotography is technique and that takes practice.
There is a Jimmy Buffet song that I like to use when I get irritated with my work. "Relax, Breath in, Move on..."
Keep trying and follow the advise you get. Its the cheapest thing we have going here and everyone just gives it away like its Christmas.
You'll have to decide what you keep and what goes back to the Walmart return counter.
And I forgot to say welcome to our neck of the world.

I have been watching. Every morning when I leave for work about 6:10AM, I open the garage door and look out and see them lining up and moving about. And this time of year, there aren't so many morning clouds.

I have been wanting to get out back and play.
I keep running into clouds here. And today some form of vertigo, I guess.
But clear skies are ahead. Maybe I can go play with my Macro on Max-o?
It's been set up for days now... :hunf:

Hello all, I am a returning member to UHH and a few nights ago I noticed a bright object in the eastern sky, much brighter than a star. Got out my Nikon Bridge Camera and took the following pictures. I believe the ISO was set at 100 with 1/100 shutter speed, taken at full 42x zoom and cropped. No tripod, just rested my camera on top of a privacy fence. I am new to this type of photography. Can someone tell me what I've captured? Is it a nebula, Venus or what?

I think I finally solved the mystery. It's Capella a double star in the constellation Auriga.

This certainly looks like something out of focus. Only a bright planet or very bright star could do this. Venus doesn't rise until about 3:30 AM and Jupiter more than an hour after that. The brightest evening star to the east right now is Alderamin, and it is only something like 2nd magnitude. It can't be a nebula as those are quite dim. The star Sirius rises too late and is far to the south.

Just not sure what you were seeing.l.

Jim, I had no idea what I was seeing either. That's what made me return to the "hog" for advice. Glad I did.

Thank you Albuqshutterbug. Feels good to be back. Such a nice group of people in this section. By the way, I LOVE my Canon t3i. Have taken some fabulous shots with it. Just seems like my Nikon outshines it for moon shots, which surprised me. (Here's one taken not long ago.) I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time in this forum soaking up as much info as I can.

Sonny, thanks for your response. That's a great website. My pics were taken about a week ago during the time of the eclipse/blood moon. I am new to all of this. Do you know if the star/planet lineup would still have been the same at that time?

Not off hand. But the planets change much slower than the Moon does.
Between my mount going down, and poopy weather, I've been out of touch. I go out and look up, sigh, and go back in. :-(

The Planets are going to be close to the same at 5:00 AM with the Moon just below Jupiter.
Remember to draw a little diagram so you know which is which.
I'm setting an alarm so I can see it and an Atlas V go off at Vandenberg AFB.

If you have a clear view to the NW at 5:39 to 10:00 AM you may be able to see it.
It goes up pretty high then turns left to the South.
I have seen one from Santa Monica.
They are not giving away the exact launch time and payload.
So it's a secret don't tell anyone

Oh My!
Mum's the word....

I've seen several of them long ago. Always spectacular to watch.
I do wonder why the morning launch. As I recall they were usually afternoon/evening launches.
OK, I won't tell anybody...
