there is no "E" at the end of lens... why do so many people spell this way? It is simply Lens!

This is not constructive. This is a photography forum not a spelling and grammar forum.
Who cars how the guy spells it?
I saw someone spell in "lins" a few days ago and there was an uproar over that spelling that had nothing to do with answering the original question.

I get a little annoyed when I see bad spelling, words used out of context, bad grammar, etc. However, mentioning it is not constructive and is an example of why people frequently announce that this site is not friendly and that they are leaving.

I hope we can get past this.

Maybe for those that really want things spelled right, we could have a spelling section so that people can go there to find out that
it's Canon, not Cannon;
it's Nikon, not Nixon or Nikkon,
it's lens, not lense, but lenses is acceptable
it's lens, not lins, or linz.

At least then if people care, they'll go read this and find out. If they don't care, then pointing out in one of their posts isn't going to make them change. It's going to annoy them and make them want to leave.
quote=Lucian there is no "E" at the end... (show quote)

I guess it's completely lost on those who correct those who correct spelling that they are doing the exact same thing when they post things like this.

Besides not giving us the source of your quote, you destroy your own argument in the last line. Hardly surprizing to find the Welsh confused about the spelling of English words. To prove my point I show one Welsh train station sign ........

Hate to burst your bubble sir but you are WRONG!!!

Despite that fact that you might find it in an obscure dictionary somewhere it is still the wrong way to spell it and just because you find it somewhere does not make it correct, nor acceptable.

Since you wanted to be so precise I ask you to read this please: A lens is an optical device with perfect or approximate axial symmetry which transmits and refracts light, converging or diverging the beam. A simple lens consists of a single optical element. A compound lens is an array of simple lenses (elements) with a common axis; the use of multiple elements allows more optical aberrations to be corrected than is possible with a single element.

Lenses are typically made of glass or transparent plastic. Elements which refract electromagnetic radiation outside the visual spectrum are also called lenses: for instance, a microwave lens can be made from paraffin wax.

The variant spelling "lense" is sometimes seen. While it is listed as an alternative spelling in some dictionaries, most mainstream dictionaries do not list it as acceptable, nor as a correct way to spell the word "lens". I rest my case.

I've only been here for a couple of weeks, and I have seen some snotty posts here regarding spelling and such.I was hoping that this would be a nice place to visit and learn all I can about photography.
This is no place for rudeness. The person asked a legitimate question and didn't deserve to be jumped on.

I agree with Jpintn's spelling of 'LENSE'.
The 'mainstream dictionaries' you refer to must cater to the less informed customers that are now available.

The Queen's english spells color as colour. They also spell lens as lense. So, what does knowning this help your fellow photographers? If you want to teach English then do so, please. There are alot of high school students that are not prepared to enter the workforce. Pick up a copy of the Illford Manual.

Listen I would still consider to sell the lens if its only worth 50.00 then thats what I would sell it for. However the shipping would have to be covered. I just do not use and I would like to see someone get some use out of it! Thanks for interest.

The word "lense", used as a noun, does not exist in what is considered by many the final arbiter of the English language - the Oxford English Dictionary.

In the verb form:
