Nice Shots! I struggle with night game photography and blame it a lot on the lighting of a particular field. Just curious...what camera body, lens, ISO, speed and aperture were you using that night.

These shots were taken with a Nikon D610 and Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Lens. ISO 2000, f 3.2 and Shutter speed 1/320, constant spot metering and vivid color capture on a monopod. The challenge being getting enough light to capture the image without too high an iso and stopping action on constantly moving subjects at different distances.... From my limited experience slower lenses do not let in enough light to stop action at night. F2.8 is ok, but the depth of field is just a bit shallow for me even at distance. Even at that, these photos needed post processing in PSE 12 to lighten them up a bit. The parents of these kids love the shots which at the end of the day is my goal.

Thanks so much! I use a D3, Nikon 70-200mm. Sounds like I pumped up the ISO (1600) and shutter speed (1000) too much. On top of that, the aperture was set at 2.8. The closer shots were fairly good, but anything cropped was washed out. Will try something closer to what you describe. Here are examples of my better shots. Still not what I expect!

I agree, distant shots are pretty much a complete loss at night. I played around with settings at a night practice before the game to see what worked for me. That way at game time I can just shoot and not worry about how things are going to come out.

Good advice! Thanks. As I remember, someone told me to meter to the field level and trust it. Will have to experiment as you suggest.
