I have Adobe CC loaded on my desktop & laptop. (just purchased the laptop) I'm also fairly new to LR but I've decided to jump in. On my desktop my catalogue is my B:/. How do I get access to my catalogue on my laptop. Should I install LR mobile instead of LR? Please be as descriptive as possible. I'm a bit lost/confused.

Thanks,
Mark

Go to the post processing section and ask Searcher for assistance. He is the most qualified to answer specific questions like this one.

Do you have, can you 'borrow,' or even buy an external HD? Copy from desk computer to the ext HD, then load to your laptop.

Or an 'interconnect' file transfer cable to use to transfer the files? Just connect the USB cable and the internal drive of 1 shows as an external drive on the other.

There IS away to network the 2 computers to allow file transfers between them, but I'm not the one to tell you how do that. Once you get this set up, it works like a charm.

Or, use a thumb drive, copy & transfer them a 'few' at a time.

Good luck!

I do know all those techniques. I was hoping the cloud would allow access to the catalog.

Thanks,

I figured it out. If I upload LR catalog to Dropbox or another cloud service and sync the catalog with my devices, I should be able to access it via laptop, iPhone or iPad with mobile CC. At least I think that will work.

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, you need to share the file (more of a file question than a lr question).

There is a difference between syncing and sharing. in syncing, each computer has its own local copy and then updates the cloud version (which pushes the change down to the other computers) in the background. Generally this works but I have had situations of
1. updates file on computer 1
2. dropbox takes its time in syncing with the cloud
3. then update file on computer 2
4. drop box updates c2 version just file
5. sometime later c1 updates hit the cloud. because dropbox sees that these updates occurs earlier than what it has on the cloud, it creates "conflicted copy" version. Its up to you to go figure it out how to reconcile the two versions

try it for a while but keep an eye out for this.

Mark, I thought that LR Mobile only enabled access to specific collections you set up in your (non-mobile) instance of LR, not the whole catalog.

Searcher will set you straight.

Thanks for the info. If I elect to go that way, I'll be wary of those type issues.

Thanks. Searcher did respond with a very complete explanation. In the interim, I became aware of some of my misconceptions. I have a better understanding now.

Thank you for the responses. UHH rocks!!

Now I just have to emerge myself into LR tutorials and begin using the catalog & Develop mode. I've been an exclusive "PS"er. Many of my photography friends are encouraging my use of LR. It's time to get off the edge of the pool!

Not for nuthin', but could you share Searcher's explanation if not excessively long? Thank you...appreciate it.

Here is what I do and I travel a lot with my laptop, but transfer all to my desk computer.
I use a external hard drive (2 TB with thunderbolt connector which is compatable with my macbook pro and my mac pro at home) When I download the card I put the files on the hard drive, not my computer and tell LR to make a backup on a second identical external HD. I don't have enough disk space on the laptop for the files. Then I can work on the photos in the laptop if I have time during the trip.
When home, I export the new photos as a catalog to the same HD; move the HD to the desk computer, and import the new catalog into my main photo catalog; LR will ask you where to put the files. Now you have all your work on the desktop. Finally I copy the backup files from the external HD to my backup HD on the desktop. May seem like a lot of work, but it works for me and is easy.

Not sure which direction Searcher guided you, but sounds like more of a network question than a Lightroom question. Are you trying to share the pictures between two computers or copy the same pictures to two computers?
