Okay, I'm a neophyte and shoot only occasionally; but my question is I turn my camera on and off most every time I shoot a picture. I shoot landscape photography and it might be 30 to 40 minutes between shots. Is this going to wear out my on/off switch or does it have a power saving mode that it goes into. Can't find anything to that effect in the manual. Nikon D40x owner. Thanks

Check out page 74 of your user's manual. You have to be in "Full" on the CSM/Setup menu in order to access the timers.

There is an on-going discussion about On/Off. Look here. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-35880-1.html

In your case I'd probably turn it off and back on when you are ready to shoot. You aren't going to wear out the switch unless you are turning it on and off every 30 seconds or something like that. If your camera has to be ready for an action shot, I would not turn it off. All modern digital cameras including point and shoots have a sleep or reduced power mode after a period of time when no buttons are pushed.
