Hi Gang, I am going to China in June I will be taking both a p & S camera and my A 300 I have a Tamerac Adventure camera bag and 2 lenses for my A 300 a 18-70 mm and a 75-300mm lense. What precautions should I take to prevent enviromental damage to the lenses while I'm there?

Thanks
Blake

It will be hot but not excessively so. Expect very heavy rain and thunder storms in Central and South China.

So take rain hoods and dry your gear (esp, the bag) out at night.

I travel to Asia (China, Thailand, Bhutan, India) about twice a year. First, insure your gear! My bag is about 11K and it is itemized and completely insured for about $200 per year with State Farm. Secondly, I use a Lowe Flipside 400 bag; it zips open from my back - so no one can open it from the outside. I also carry a couple shower caps to throw over the lense to keep dust and rain off as well as a large trash bag that I simply throw over the rig when I am using a tripod. NEVER lay your camera down unless you are with it! In other countries (to remain nameless) I keep the strap wrapped around my wrist when walking to prevent a theft. Also, dump the Nikon and Canon strap, it is only screaming for trouble. Hope this helps!

One pro photog was showing that she had a paper listing all her gear with serial numbers. She had that paper verified and stamped at a customs office here in the USA so when she travels she can prove that it all hers and that she did not buy it overseas. She indicated that this saves her a lot of time at customs.

Great idea. I have all of my serial numbers on file with State Farm where they are insured. I have never been asked about ownership of my gear and travel overseas about 140 days a year.

treat them the same way you do when you are home. And have a lot of memory cards and a way to back up. Keep shooting and have a great trip

Normal precautions are adequate, but some places are more difficult than others. China presents no unusual problems. Expect humidity. I lived 15 years in Asia.

Interesting. It's never saved me any time at all, which is why I stopped doing it.

Cheers,

the Terracotta warriors site has a sign that says no tripods, but I set mine up and nobody said anything.

Thank Carl, Im not sure if I was going to take my tripod or not. My wife has a walking stick that has 1/4-20 threads in the top. So I will have a monopod available.
