They increased my lens price.

I see where a lot of you folks have purchased from KEH and give them high marks. I am considering selling them a Canon L lens that is only a few months old. I did get a quote from them. My question, how different is the final price paid then the quote was? Thanks for your time.

We'll see. I sent it to them yesterday. I would expect that they would get back to me middle of next week.

I too live in Atlanta, they do not have a show room per se, if wish to purchase an item and travel to their store, you must make an appointment to have the item or items brought from the warehouse look at the item. KEH is very plain, so don't expect a lavish showroom, it's pretty much barebones

I have sold several lenses and bodies to KEH and have found out that if you are honest in describing the item to be sold to the price paid versus is usually identical. I have never been paid less than quote I received.
If you do live in the Atlanta area you can drop off items you wish to sell if shipping or time is a consideration.
Several years ago I purchased a Canon 2X extender, for some reason when it they went to ship the item I had purchased was gone, or had been sold, they shipped a new version and I was not charged for the difference in price

It probably depends on how you grade them when requesting a quote.

Right! It's like going to look at a used car advertised as "like new," and it's a pile of rust. KEH probably gets a lot of that.

Curious ...... what lens are you selling?

Its a 24-70 F4/L lens. I tried to sell here it here, but no response. I also tried Craigslist. I looked at Amazon, but they didn't offer as much as KEH. Well, its shipped. We'll see how I did.

I have always sold my used Nikon equipment on ebay. I always get a lot more than sending it off to others to sell for me. The main difference is with ebay you keep the markup, you don't give that away to retailers. And, as a result, I pocket the markup and I have more money to buy newer equipment.

This is the first time I have not used Craigslist or this site to sell something. I have never used Ebay to sell, I have used Ebay to buy, however.

Try to sell them here first mark them up from what KEH offered you.

Yes, so have I.

Me also. When B&H offered $85 for my Canon F-1 and 3 prime lenses. I decided to keep them. I can use them as paperweights. Or even (gasp) shoot film again.

I live in the Atlanta area too and as has been said, they do not have a showroom. I have purchased many items from them. I've had to return a few & when I do so, I drop it off at their location (near Symrna) to save shipping costs. I have sold to them, but the time I did, it was when they had a booth at the "Photoshop World" event in Atlanta. No, they pay less than what you can get selling elsewhere (forums like these are best IMHO) but still a fair offer considering.

There are many ways to be rid of gear you don't need starting with giving it away all the way to selling it privately. Selling it privately is probably the most profitable approach but you end up taking the risks and doing all the work.

Vendors like KEH are the solution for those who just don't want to bothered. They provide you with cash and then they take responsibility for selling the item.

Sometimes the difference between what you get and what they charge a buyer cam be dramatic. But think about what this all costs them.

First of all they have to store the item. during this period they are paying rent for the space it occupies and the cash that they had to lay out doesn't earn any interest. Depending on the item it could sit for years before it is sold. Some of their offerings seem more apt for a museum than for a photographer so they have a limited market. When you factor in these kinds of things sometimes they don't actually make any money at all when it's finally sold. So items that sell well and quickly often have to subsidize those that aren't selling at all.

KEH does very well I'm sure, their business model works obviously. But when you look at the amount they invested in stock against the revenues they're earning, I suspect the spread between buying and selling is reasonable.

But now if you are willing to take all the risks and do the work, selling privately will get you more money. But how much better you will do depends on what your own time is worth.

I think quote's for used item's are always low, reason being they have to be resold and kept in stock until then. I recently got a quote for an 18-105 in great shape, wasn't used as much as I though I would and I'd just bought an 18-140 to replace it. Got a quote over the phone of $90 but when the written quote came back it was much less. So I put it on Craigs List, first time I ever put something on there. Asked $300 for it; couple day's later got an e-mail offering $200 and I took it. I think list was about $396 and I figured if I got 50% I've do well. I don't even offer to sell film camera's, they are not worth anything. I bought my F5 new, I think it was around $1800. I see them in used equipment at about $450- and I figure that I could get maybe $200 out of it. For $200 I'll keep it. For $400 I'll keep it. Just wish I could remember where I put it away at!

I really agree with everything being said. My comment about the determined price being lower than the original wasn't that upsetting to me. It was a film camera; I have too many cameras; I didn't want to hassle with Craigslist since you can run into some weird folks out there. I will purchase items on Craiglist of items I am very familiar with and are not electronic, like sports equipment.
So, really don't want to give KEH a bad rap. My wife is happy one more camera is gone and we can go out to dinner. LOL
Thanks

It depends on how they rate the condition of the lens. They rate very conservatively which is good when you buy from them but sometimes bad when you sell to them. They also have to warranty the lens and still make a profit on it.

I find this true.
They must make money and are conservative in the rating.
You might think E+ and they say good. But for me they do give an explanation of the rating they provided and I am generally happy as what I do sell is usually several years old and I have gotten my money's worth. It all depends on your expectations.
