Is this camera worth $100?
A friend of mine let me bring his used camera home to see if i wanted to buy it (he upgraded) It is a Nikon D100 with a Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm lens. I am not a camera buff but have always wanted to learn. 1st question is this camera and lens worth 100 dollars and will I be able to know how to work it?
Jesse
The Nikon D100 is a good camera to learn with. Let it be known: there is ALOT of information to cover in regards to the different settings.
This goes with every dslr.
If you are looking for a camera that is portable and a simple point and shoot; I don't recommend it. Comparatively speaking; its big , its bulky, it has heft, it has limitations in low light, there isn't any self cleaning of the sensor and it has a small screen.
If you are looking for a camera that allows you some room for creativity, is built like a tank, is reliable; has great shutter and aperature controls and you are willing to learn how to finesse it's limitations.
Grab it.
Short answer- If you decide to buy; you will have to learn how to use it.

I would say by all means Yes.....I have this camera and it is a good workhorse. that said it does have its limitations but it is a good all around camera and it is one that I learned. It has created some stunning pictures and has some really good dynamic range at 200 ISO up that any and you really loose quality. I still use this camera as a back up and use it as a primary at the beach....the only problems I have ever had with it has been to replace the shutter once and I have had it several years and have put many miles on it......

Absolutely,
I recently sold my D100, paid 1600.00 new, traded it in on a new
version and only got 180.00 in the deal, 100.00 is a bargain, the lens alone is worth that.

YES, YES, YES, YES BY THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY YES. If you dont want to buy it I will. It is a 6mp camera you will need the manual if he dosent have it. I had a d-100 paid also about 1800 for it. When I lost my job I pawned it to cover rent and lost it to the pawnshop. Worst mistake of my life. If you check used prices for d=100s online at Keh.com,adorama.com, or b+hphoto .com you will find that they are going for anywhere from over 200 in rough shape to 450 like new. If you are serious about photograpy it is a great camera. It is not a simple camera but if willing to learn she will treat you right. If on the other hand you want something just to take snapshots with you can find decent point and shoot cameras at the above listed websites. or your local pawnsop. If you decide not to buy it please put me in contact with your friend. When I lost my d-100 I felt like I lost a limb. Seriously. Thanks
It is definitely worth $100. The lens is worth more than $100. The Nikon D100 was an excellent camera when it came out. You would need to read the book and have someone give you some instruction on how to use the camera. Hopefully he still has the manual. If not you can download it from Nikon's website.

It's DEFINITELY worth $100.00.
See if he has the manual for it as well. Read up on it, you will be getting an excellent camera to not only learn on, but it should last you until you decide to take "pro" quality pics if you progress that far. This camera is near pro quality, so it will give you plenty of "growing room" before you would want to upgrade.

You have a darn good friend if he's willing to sell it to you for $100.00... He's giving it to you. Like others said, the lense itself is worth his asking price.
I would JUMP at the opportunity to get a camera like that for that price.
I don't agee with most of the replies - not saynig they are wrong, just see it a little differently. To me to decide if anything is worth a price I try to answer - is this something I will use or is this something I will resell to make a profit? As to this camera I would say it is fairly priced as to the features it has so then I would try to decide if I care to learn it's features and will I. It is not worth it if you decide it is a pain to use and it ends up in a drawer. I am firmly convinced most including me have way too much, with way too many features in this country. By the way - I most likely would buy it. Good luck & enjoy.

You're right, Goofy! I didn't stop to look at the date. I'm just curious now, why I got a message in my inbox that this thread had a new post? I clicked on the link in the e-mail, and when I saw the discussion about the manual, looked up the link for that and replied.
Guess I'll have to check every post for the date now.
Heck, I don't even look at posts older than 3 pages, much less at posts older than 3 years.
Oh, well, lesson learned: Look at the date before you answer, Esther!
I wonder if he is still thinking of purchasing it :)
