Started back in 1945 with a Kodak box camera then got an Argus A2 then an Argus C3 and then won a Minolta SRT 101 which got me really serious about photography. At one time had 68 different cameras. Got my first DSLR a few years ago and spend many happy hours out with my Canon SX10iS.

1961 Nikon issued by US Army with a f2 50mm lens and a book that described the sunny rule. Then I got fancy and bought my own Yashica ($55 hard earned money including lenses) with a F2 50mm and a are you ready f3.5 135mmm lens and I bought a light meter. Then in 1962 issued a Leica (I think M2) with a f2 50mm summicron and used my own light meter. Lost the Leica when went down in Nam in 65. Yashica was shared by those who returned to Okinawa. So I then bought a Nikon view finder that was a copy of the Leica and should have kept it. From there to various Canons from F1 QL on up. Now have a Canon T1I and thinking of getting out of the SLR world and back into the rangefinder world with the new Canon X1 or 1X or some such designation.....

I'm dating myself here but:
-- high school newspaper "photographer" 1974-75. Nikon SLR
-- got my feet wet at university with an old, borrowed Nikon SLR. learned my way around a dark room during those years.
-- 1979 my first owned SLR, Mamiya 1000S
-- 2007 went digital with a Canon XTi, upgraded to the 7D in 2010.
-- finalist at Betterphoto 2010.

Each step of the way it has been an on-going process of learning and becoming even more serious than before.

Note for AVarley...I used to date myself...before I met my wife. Self wasn't bad but I think I'll keep my wife.

O.K. Back to reality...started in the '50s about the fifth or sixth grade...earned a living full time with one form of photography or another since 1966...Press cameras, Rollies, THE AWESOME NIKON F WITH NOTHING BUT A PENTAPRISM, Bonica GS1, and finally entered the amazing digital age with a Canon D1s...currently using D1s mkII and 5D mk II....looking forward to the D1X and the 5d mkIII....

Got my first SLR, a Nikon F in 1959, to take the workload from my Leica 111c and an Argus C. Rolleiflex, Hasselblads, MPP 5x4 and Sinar 5x4 came later, (as the money rolled in). Supposedly retired now, and the Argus is the only one I have do not have.

Thought I would add another comment re several cameras I notice receiving attention in the Replies....When on assignment in the Middle East in the '70's, the assignment came with a Hasselblad with a few lenses, and it was nothing less than awesome..and I want to add to the chorus of people praising that great standard, the Nikon F...had mine for at least 20 years and finally gave to my daughter when she became interested in photography...She has since passed it on to HER daughter...still in use, never a problem!! First serious camera - a used Leica G in 1955. Stiall have and still love it (it still works!), but I don't still use it.

First twin-lens reflex (Yashicamat) in 1959, for glorious B&W negatives and beautiful color slides.

First SLR (Exakta) in 1961. Several Pentax cameras in the sixties and 70's. First Nikon (FE2) in 1985. First digital camera in 1994 (don't remember the brand), after 3 years of processing scans of positive and negative films in early image-processing software. First Photoshop in 1993. First Nikon Digital (D100) in 2002. Nikon D3 in 2009; D3100 in 2012. Current Photoshop CS5.

And have enjoyed every minute of it!

I'm interested in knowing how long some of you have been in the game?

I've been reading and learning a hell of a lot, after buying my first DSLR at Christmas a few months ago. Before that it was all cell phone camera shots. This board has been a great resouce and I can't wait to keep learning more and more!

Wow you got a great response here. Well my first SLR was an Olympus in 1979, then in 1989 I got another Olympus SLR which just died and in 2004 I got my first Digital Camera with a telephoto lens and 5.0 MP, 5 X Telephoto capability and yesterday I just received my first Nikon DSLR D80. I still have the 1979 Olympus SLR. I got into Olympus because my brother-in-law was the service manager for Olympus.

I got my first DSLR in 2009, only really started to learn how to use it late in 2010 (hubby got me the "understandign exposure" book for Christmas 2010 and that's what got my juices going. So I've been shoting seriously for just around 2 years.

Boy, I wish I could learn that fast. Nice going MWAC.

Thanks, I wish I could say it has been easy, but I would only be fooling myself. I still have a long, long, long way to go.

I caught the photo bug in mid 2007 when I bought my horse. I have always enjoyed taking photos but really started paying attention and 'trying for that shot' thanks to the horse. Went from a point and shoot to a bridge camera in 2010, which just added fuel to the fire, and less then a year later got the DLSR.

Well I guess we will go from years of experience here to just 3 months. I bought an Olympus SP-810UZ in Feb. and upgraded to a Canon T2i this month and I love it.

Horses are becoming one of my favorite subjects. Between their curiosity and gentleness they are a perfect subject for learning. Here is my favorite so far.
