Canon, Sony, and Nikon are all excellent cameras. They all have some issues from time to time. It rarely affects more then a small percentage of any particular model. No matter which brand you buy to take apart, you will learn something. Which one you buy to actually use isn't really going to matter if you buy one with the features, capabilities, and feel that you want.

And I think you can add Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji to this list among mainstream manufacturers.

Like many other readers here I have used Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus and Mamiya (medium format). I finally settled on Nikon and have had great success with them. I travel a lot and have gradually whittled away at what I carry with me down to only two bodies. One is a D7000 and two lenses, and the other is a small Coolpix 9900. I've tried them all and have found that this combination seems to work well when I'm on the road. Relatively portable and very compact...I just got tired of carting 40 lbs of bodies, lenses, etc etc through the bush in Africa or streets of London.
Of all of the systems I tried I liked the Olympus (OM1 & OM2) because they were small and light weight. However the Nikons seemed to fit my hand better and I liked their digital menu system a lot. None of these cameras were head and shoulders above the rest, all worked fine and made great images. It was a personal choice to go solely with Nikon.
As with anything, any top of the line camera is relatively as good as any of the
other makes on the market. It just comes down to personal preference.

My panties are fine! I love my Nikon, my last camera was also a Nikon. I think it is a pure choice issue. Although, I have friends who would vehemently disagree. C'mon over to the dark side!

When from Kodak to Minolta to Nikon; also have a Fuji. Except for self inflicted(or granddaughter) have not had any serious problems with cameras.
Did have a problem with a 200mm Nikor macro. Stopped focusing - auto or manual. Unable to be repaired due to lack of parts.

You had one of these that failed???

I shoot Canon and I depend on it like it depends on me I have had zero problems and if I do I know Canon stands behind me. I wouldn't mind having a Nikon to play with if I had the money to get one and I don't have and won't have on for some time. I respect Nikon and it's a good camera. I just had a question and it was answered thanks for your help. Bushy out. -Bushy

I have a friend who shoot canon and I shoot Nikon and sony. We come shots all the time. The cameras are pretty equivalent. The Nikon seems to have better color, and less noise. Sharpness is about the same. Maybe a hint better with the Nikon. Video seems to be better all around with the Canon. My Sony which is an a 6000, not a full frame, does as good if not better than my Nikon full frame. I love the electronic VF on the Sony and miss it when I go back to Nikon. Is there enough difference to say one is better than the other.......no. It's all in what you want to achieve with your camera and how it feels and how easy it is for you to use.

It seems like most of the problems here has to do with Nikon. Now that I threw that out there don't get you panties in a bunch. I am not slamming Nikon. Is it because there are more Nikon users. I am not trying to stir up a pot I just wanted to know about the ratio in the Canon and Nikon and Sony users. I was thinking about finding an older Nikon and buying it to learn both sides Of the camera issue. It just a question. I kid about Nikon cameras but Nikon does make a good camera and I want to have some knowledge. I need to be learning things I can't just sit and watch TV all day when I can be learning about cameras. I do a lot of reading about all cameras, all cameras. It keeps my mind, what little I have going all the time. I don't want arguments just true facts. Thanks all...

It is an relevant question. If you trying to figure out which camera breaks down more often as criteria, your not going to find an answer here. What you will find are personal experiences and personal opinions from a group with questionable skill sets, knowledge and abilities. (Sorry for everyone I offended. Just my personal opinion, perhaps even irrelevant). Common logic is that if you stay within the major players, your going to be okay.

That being said, you would benefit more by just taking the camera you have and shoot. Shoot in conscious manner. Look for and create light and composition opportunities. It really does not matter what camera you have. You can actually do this in your own home just using the natural light from any window or a flash, setting up a small box studio with common household items, flowers from the backyard, a colored back drop, etc. I think you would learn more about photography and how to create a compelling image than gathering information about which camera breaks down more often.

Who would see it differently?

And what's wrong with that? Reviews go a long way in determining whether I will buy something or not. Personal preference and opinions do count.

After reading through this whole discussion, what I see is that the reliability rate of either major brand is so great that purchasing grey market would be the way to go. I think a better discussion would be to find out how many users here bought grey market products and had problems with repairs.

Reviews are different. I am not talking about that but comments like, 'I have this one and have had not problems". How useful is that? And weight that against another comment regarding the same camera or lens, "I have had problems". Perhaps only those with problems respond. In my opinion it serves no purpose. It is not scientific.

First you need to very critically look at what is reported to be a 'problem'. Chances are the majority are the result of failure to learn how to use the hardware in hand. This is not a problem of any camera.

I do not hear of many Nikon technical problems that are the result of design flaw or defective parts (omitting the spate of problems dealing with grease on sensors that was taken care of by Nikon).

I have been a Nikon shooter since about 1970 and have never had a serious problem with them. I know many pro shooters who say the same thing about Canon. Both are good systems IMO.

Bushy, I don't know what exactly you're basing that on. You do t say exactly where you read that.
According to the camera repairman that is here on the Hog, Riggens, he would agree with you.
Some base a fact on what they read here on the Hog, but old people tend to be Nikon shooters, while in the overall population there are more Canon shooters so statistically there should be more Canon repairs.
I've not owned that many cameras but have never had a problem with any camera. Maybe you or someone else can point us to non-emperical data. ;-)

I think SS got a point here! SS said old people tend to be Nikon shooters because old Nikon were better than Canon but I think new Nikon isn't better than Canon. Very likely new Canon is better than Nikon but I don't know that for sure as I don't have any new Canon.
