In several of my books the authors recommend that if one is thinking of photography more as a business then a hobby one should find thier own area or niche. The idea is that any one in any field has a better chance of standing away the herd, perfect their own style if they find one or two types of photography - be it wedding, pet, travel, ect. It was also mentioned that a customer would be more apt to purchase from one who does mostly what they are in the market for as opposed to a general parctitioner.
All imput is appreciated & I thank you.
I think people find something they enjoy shooting and maybe it is something that they enjoy otherwise, flowers, sunsets, landscapes etc, so they develop a passion for it and thus get better at it..and I have always heard that you will always do best what you have a passion for..
I have done basically anything I could do to make ends meet. I have been doing weddings for over twenty years. I have helped photographers do proms, homecomings, senior pictures, pre-schools, you name it. If you have the luxury to specialize that is great. I did whatever assignment that I was given.
My sister just went to Photoshop World and was sharing what different speakers said. One particular speaker said the same thing...specialize. From my experience, when a photographer is first starting a business, he/she almost has to be willing to photograph many different areas. Eventually, though, I think it is very important to specialize. A person who spreads themselves over so many areas isn't likely to really excel at anything. Right now, I'm at the stage of photographing everything although I'm lucky that this is really a hobby, and I don't depend on it for money. My favorite thing to photograph is true, candid lifestyle sessions. I'm hoping eventually that can be my specialty.
