Have my cake and eat it too. Sacrificing the AE-L button for BBF.

I sometimes shot with my Nikon D5300. Unlike cameras like the Df it only has one AE-L/AF-L button which I have programmed for BBF. How do I work around this so I can lock in exposure, like shooting in backlit situations with a person in the foreground?

Use manual mode.

Not sure how your D5300 works, but on my D7200, I can program a different button to lock exposure. Check your manual and you may be able to do that with your D5300.

the shutter pressed half way now locks exposure instead of focus on my 7100.

Right, like the Fn button, or DoF button.

Check your manual. In Menu > Controls you should be able to change the setting of your choice of either the Fn or Pv (Depth of Field) buttons to the AEL-Hold setting. That works on D7100 and D750 and that or something similar will likely work on your 5300.

This is what I used to do with my older Canon models, where you had to use the AE Lock for BBF. It's the easiest solution.

There was the option to set up AE Lock on every shot, too.... But I always felt that was a bad idea. I simply don't want AE Lock most of the time, only need it occasionally.

I just select spot metering and set the spot on the subject I want metered and hold the shutter half way down to do it. You can then recompose holding that shutter position. Oh, you need to use AF-S.

Alternatively there is a menu custom setting to undo the autofocus/exposure on shutter half-press. I don't see that helps me at all, though. It just adds another button to press sometimes confounding my fingers.

It works better for me to use the Fn button for ISO. The D5300 doesn't have the DoF button.
