We have dealt with Apple in the near past and found Them to be very accommodating and helpful to us in solving any problem with Aperture.

Now, however our issue, as is that of fellow Apple users on UHH, is more complex. You see, we have an iMac, an iPad, and two iPhones. Therefore, we are loyal Apple customers who now feel we are being betrayed by Apple as they take away the Aperture post processing software. Aperture is just complex enough to make it an elegant and extremely useful tool in reworking our pictures. In addition, it readily accepts add-ons such as the Nik, Topaz and Photomatix, among others. It has taken me a while to learn it, but I am now becoming quite comfortable with it.

As most of you know, Aperture is being replaced by Photos. Let me tell you that Apple should be ashamed to put their name on Photos. It is simplistic, juvenile, and doesn’t even do a fraction of the post-processing and filing as did the old iPhoto. With due respect, Photos reminds me of the internal software that might be found in a multi-colored Fisher-Price child’s computer in a toy store.

I read photography chat rooms including UHH all the time where people regularly complain about Photos and it’s simplicity. They are told that they need to subscribe to Lightroom. When they do, they find out that not only is Lightroom very difficult to use on a Mac but it has a long and complex learning curve as well. I, for one don’t want to try to learn Lightroom. It will take me a long time to get me to where I am with Aperture, and it’s $10.00 per month, until who knows when they will increase it.

I can’t imagine a company the size of Apple actually making the decision to replace an application that has grown, been streamlined and accepted like Aperture; with such an inferior product such as Photos. There has to be more here than meets the eye. Is Apple planning to get out of the photo application business altogether? Is this their first step out the door? Shame on Apple.

They’re much bigger than we are, but who knows I hope that you all can find someone who will read this and make a difference. Aperture users: Please email Apple now!

Exactly why when I heard that Aperture was going away, I switched to Adobe Lightroom. Joined the Creative Cloud subscription and have been happily using Lightroom, Bridge & Photoshop for the past year or longer.

In my opinion, I do think the Adobe Camera Raw does a better job out of the gate converting raw files (NEF).

Buying Lightroom 6 is an alternative to renting it by the month. This is the last version that will be sold outright.

Of your entire post, I find this statement the most puzzling. I use both PCs and a Mac. I also have used PS and LR, though only a little, on both. The commands are the same, menus the same, etc. Why did you find LR to be difficult to use, specifically, on a Mac?

I'll admit that there is a learning curve, but a curve exists on every application that is run on any system.

I have never used Aperture (or a Mac) but from what I have gleaned on the Hog, Aperture and Lightroom both work roughly the same way - or am I completely off base?

Yes, very similar. Coming from Aperture to Lightroom was a snap since both rely on a "catalog" system, photos must be imported to be edited.

For me switching from Aperture to Lightroom was very easy. All the plugins I had (Tpoaz) came over easily and worked the same.

The "round trip" worked the same in both applications as did stacking.

I heard they were "f/stopping" aperture....,

Why not 64 it instead?

Kitchen Guy - I'm not unsympathetic to your pain, but I guess I'm surprised at your vehemence now. Apple made a corporate decision to discontinue its support of Aperture at least a year ago. The decision was widely reported (and debated) at the time. Adobe's response in the form of a two product approach (Lightroom and PS joined in The Creative Cloud) was similarly widely announced (and debated). If you prefer something other than what Adobe is offering, there are a number of choices available (also widely reported and discussed in this forum). Bottom line => it is what it is. Time for everybody to move on. /Ralph

First of all, I have never used Aperture although I have used Macs since I purchased my first Mac II SI about 25 years ago. I now use the Adobe Creative Cloud, Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC.

I don't understand the comment about Lightroom being a problem on a Mac. Yes, it does require a change in the way you work. Put all you photos in one folder (sub folders are fine), forget the finder, and use Lightroom to keep trach of everything. If you are able to make the change of no longer using the finder to catalog your photos, but use Lightroom instead, you will do fine. I'm sure the same thing applies to Windows (even though I'm a Mac person, note the spelling of Windows)!

Personally, I would encourage you to get Lightroom. I am very impressed with it. If you get it, forget the Adobe documentation. Read the first several chapters of Scott Kelby's book on Lightroom 5. (Yes, that is last years version). His description and advice on setting up Lightroom and the way you handle you photos, files, catalogues, etc. is worth the cost of the book.

Apple is all about simplicity and one size fits all. It always has been, and that's its appeal to its fan base. It's all about ease of use. I'm guessing Aperture was an aberration.

i still have Aperture on my mac and love using it..does most of what i need in my post editing..i am willing to learn lightroom but only when my computer completely crashes and I'm forced to purchase a new one..nothing seems to stay the same but over the years i have found that Apple is not as great as it used to be ..i myself am a bit old fashioned and love the internal dvd drive..but not only the macs have discontinued having that feature so did the PCs..Photos is awful..it is worse than the original iPhoto that they had ..i too am disappointed in Apple products ..it's all about the money..and it seems to me that now when you purchase a computer you need to buy more and more of the extras on your own..i do not like "renting" programs..10 dollars a month is 120 a year ..and to me that is a money maker for the company..i want a disc that i can reload if my computer should crash or if i decide to remove it....i like to purchase something and have it in my possession..

You still own aperture as in you have a perpetual license to use it. Apple are declining to support it any longer. It's up to them but they are not forced to offer it forever. So no new versions, Apple do tend to keep available software you have already installed so just ensure you have a copy of the dmg file somewhere if you want to be sure you can reinstall.

"Renting" vs Perpetual license to use is a personal choice, for me, I still have Aperture installed and useable and my Aperture Library of images is still on disk, however, with Apple dropping support, no new updates/features I myself felt more comfortable jumping to Lightroom.

When I understood what the Creative Cloud really was, I was happy to start renting for $9.99 a month.

If all I was getting was Lightroom then I would have bought, as it was though, it gave me an always current copy of Lightroom and an always current copy of Photoshop for cheap.

For my hobby, the CC deal is great in my opinion.

EDIT: In fact, now reading this I do not know why I am keeping Aperture and my old library - time for some house cleaning ;)

I shall continue with Aperture as long as my I Mac lasts. It does everything I need . It was lame of Apple to quit supporting it and I think it will cost them customers in the long run. The new photos app is pretty much useless for anyone who is serious about photography. Very shortsighted of Apple.
