Nikon P900

I am considering purchase but so disappointed that RAW is not part of the package.

My question: Is RAW software, therefore upgradeable by Nikon and available for download? Or is RAW hardware, so a new camera model must be purchased to use RAW.

UHH member insight is appreciated.

It's a hardware issue ..... it has to be included in the camera's processor. Too bad, too, because Canon's SX series have been including a RAW capability for several years now. That being said, the P900's .jpeg performance is superb, and is more than capable of producing gorgeous photographs if all you want to do is display them online.

I had also been considering the P900 due to the extreme zoom available, however the lack of RAW images was a turnoff for me.
I am now considering the Nikon 1 J5 Mirrorless. It has many features that I was looking for in a compact size as well as RAW file and 4k video, and with an FT-1 adapter I can use a lot of my existing Nikon glass.
Price is about the same.

My personal experience is that you can make limited edits to a JPEG file, such as adjusting contrast using the "curves" functionality or applying noise reduction, without diminishing the quality of the image.

(however, I did end up getting a Pentax Q-7 for myself - it's sensor is slightly larger than bridge camera sensors, so it has similar potential for getting lots of telephoto {using adapted lenses}, and it does produce RAW files)

Raw capability in superzoom cameras is only possible within the optical focal range of the lens. Once you get into the digital zoom range, you can't have raw because the camera is essentially creating the image internally. Oversimplified I'm sure, but it's akin to cropping an image in post-processing software. The original pixels that form the picture are pulled apart and the resulting spaces are filled out through extrapolation.

Am a Nikon man but suggest the Canon route for purchasing a bridge camera. Not only does the Nikon not have RAW but also does not have a hotshoe for an external flash. Canon has both.

Check out the Panasonic FZ1000 it has a larger sensor and shoots raw. Not quite the reach though

One thing I might add to the comments... I have had excellent success processing original jpg images using the camera raw filter in Photoshop. I often get some really poor quality shots from a client and have "saved" them using the CR filter. No, you do not have as much picture information to work with as in an image shot using camera raw but the results are often quite acceptable.
