There is a significant difference between "waterproof", "weather resistant", and so called "all weather" bags.

Waterproof bags can be tossed into the water; your stuff will stay dry and not get wet. Typically, these are rubberized roll-up sealed bags, no zippers. Brands like Aquapac and Tyr. I use this type to carry camera gear on the water (rafting, canoeing, kayaking). I use a separate padded storage bag (I like the Lowepro Omni line, since discontinued). The advantage to the Omni's is that you can also put them in Pelican waterproof hard shell cases.

Weather resistant bags will have waterproof material and sealed zippers. They can take direct exposure to water as rain but I wouldn't submerge them or splash them repeatedly (but they might help your gear survive in case of an accidental dunking).

All-weather bags will have water resistant material and come with a rain cover for extreme conditions.

Personally, I only trust waterproof bags if I'm on the water.

Thanks for mentioning the Pelican case. I have an old one which came with a camera bag inside. Need to find it, I may have some gear in it.

Mostly camera gear
Maybe an extra layer, jacket, hydration and an energy bar or two.
Bottom line it needs some flexibility.

Thanks all for welcoming me.
I think I get the picture.
I do have a low pro waterproof but I'm not totally happy with the suspension system for long duration trecking.
I guess I'll just have to get two bags which is what I thought.
Thank you all again for your advise.
I guess I'm going back to my home away from home B&H...:)
Be well all.

Ok, then the Lowepro packs aforementioned (I own the 450AW) by many here will do.

When I do some longer day hikes, I use a larger sized Osprey pack and will use a chest mounted carrier, such as the Clik-elite. I just got a nice chest mounted camera pack from Mountainsmith too, with a rain cover. These won't accommodate a 400 mm lens though, unless it retracts for shorter focal length/storage. I ALWAYS carry zip lock bags though! I'll carry some of different sizes to fit just about any lens length I have with me. Even the most waterproof of bags simply will not keep moisture away if you're stuck out in steady rain all day.

Welcome to UHH! I like to think of it as the hog farm...

Mr. Common Sense here:
Pretty simple really,
Any pack that works comfortably for your back and shoulders.
Then get a few sizes of Zip-Lock baggies.
I like the freezer, double zipper ones. And recently found the easy-opening ones.
If you are wondering about putting damp equipment back in a bag, use the little drying bags. Dry-Packs is one.

As an aside, we use to use a LOT of silica gel in my work. It can be dried back out and reused. ;)

It's been great reading all of your postings in the hog world....
Here is my first posting.
I need a suggestion on a waterproof camera back pack.
It needs to hold a DSLR, 80-400 mm lens and two smaller lenses, batteries
filters etc.
I'll be using this pack for hiking
Boating, skiing, you get the picture...
I'm aware there might not be one bag that fits the bill but maybe there is something close.
Thanks all.
David

Welcome to UHH! I use a Lowepro bag and it serves me well and has a waterproof cover that can be used. However, I would not use this bag on the water because it by itself is not totally waterproof.....Lowepro has a big selection though.
