It all amounts to corporate GREED!

A rebate is a way to temporarily reduce a product's price for a limited time. Reasons cpuld range fro, excess inventory to a slow time. The reasons for choosing a rebate is that any price reduction despite disclaimers to the contray become permanent in the consumer's mind. Therefore, the seller can't go back. And it discounts the continued value vs. the follow on product.

So get over the business bashing, take the rebate card and enjoy your new equipment and temporary GAS relief and spend the equivalent amount and do the arithmetic needed to appreciate the discounted transaction price.

Your option, a valid one, is to buy used. The other is to go into that clean room you built in your garage or basement and build your own 70-200 f 2.8 weather sealed Zoom Lens with the precision tools you use on your lawn mower.

Most point-of-sale systems will take multiple $ forms until total value of sale is reached.
Ken

I've found it pays to ask first if the amount on the card will not cover the purchase.

If the rebate is applied to the item cost up front, then okay. If not, I look elsewhere.

Most rebates originally required the completion of a form that was sent with your sales receipt to a processing facility. The fulfillment center then would send you a check - if everything went OK.

Then some introduced "instant" rebates - where the amount of the rebate was deducted from the purchase price. This was just another form of a sale price on the item.

The sending of a Visa, MC, or Amex card has been prevalent for any significant rebate amounts for some time now and are used by highly reputable establishments. Most can be used the same as cash.

The fact that the customer fails to use the rebate should be little reason to make them illegal.
And I guess that sales should be banned, since in many cases items are put on sale to increase foot traffic in the retailer in hopes of making collateral sales.

Not really a photo related question??

Why are some manufacturers issuing American Express Cards instead of cash for their rebates. You can't redeem them for cash you must use them for other purchases. I wanted to buy a new lens that has a $200 rebate. The only wayI could swing this deal was to use rebate money toward purchase. What is up with this. Is there away around this that I can't see? Any and all help appreciated.

Why not? I'm not trying to buy groceries I'm trying to purchase a lens. I thought it may be a heads up for someone else. Sorry about that!

I swear, some of the members here on the Hog would complain if they were hung with a new rope! Nobody is being forced to buy from a particular dealer. Nobody is being forced to accept a rebate. No matter how you look at it, a rebate is a break from whatever is the current full price of the item. If that doesn't appeal to you then just don't apply for the rebate, or just don't make use of it if it does show up in the mail, or buy from a dealer that isn't offering it, or wait for a price reduction, or wait for a sale, or just don't buy the darn thing! I've gotten five rebates from Canon, all in the form of AMEX cards. Making use of the cards was less trouble then doing the paperwork to apply for the card in the first place. My only wish is that they would simplify the process. I just sent in my 6th rebate a short while ago, but I filed it late and missed out on $100. Nobody's fault but my own for procrastinating. AMEX card or not, it still would have been worth $100 to me. Plenty of places to use it.

What I don't like is the camera store charges full price tax on a camera and or lenses then at the end of a sale deduct the rebate. I have argued that the factory rebate should come off at top of the point of sale (POS). I know what's going on the store is keeping a few extra dollars on the sale bookkeeping is adjusted to reflect the sale this goes on in the retail market all the time. I stand my ground all the time when this happens.

That depends on the state or in my case the province. Our tax laws say the merchant must collect and pay the sales tax on the selling price before rebate. If the item is on sale then sales tax is charged on the sale price. It is not the merchant but your government that has their hand in your pocket!!!

I once worked part time at a well known office supply store. I asked the manager why the manufactures of products offered rebates instead of just reducing the price up front.
He said it was just to get information on buyers of their products. That is the reason for long forms to fill out to get their rebates.

This is almost as bad. Purchased a Visa card at Walmart for our daughter. Daughter put it in the drawer for a month or so. When she finally went to use it, the card wasn't worth full value. Seems they deduct a small amount each month the card isn't used. I have to admit, that company is good at squeezing every last dime out of a person.
