My point was that some folks are not using PS and/or LR, and they will have to purchase upgrades if they want their software to be current.
Agree with this and prior post. About to go to CC and start with PS. Till now only LR and Nik and Photomatix. PS will be a leap for me but I want access to layers etc.
Any good tutorials out there?
I use a MacBook Pro and have used Aperture 3 with it for about 4 years. I worked very hard to become proficient with it after researching Aperture vs Lightroom. I feel a bit let down by Apple and I am switching to Lightroom; help is much more available than it was for Aperture. By the way, I still love the MacBook.

I finally purchased a MacBook Pro. I searched the forum for information on photo editing software for Mac. The last comprehensive discussion is from 2011--just a little out of date.
I would prefer not to have subscription software if there are good options out there. I have Lightroom and have used Photoshop. I did subscribe to the Creative Suite for a year but ended up having to write to the Vice President in charge of Customer Service to get an issue resolved that I had spent over two weeks on the phone everyday for 2-6 hours. Funny how that works.
Your experience and advise would be appreciated.

Do whatever you have to do to get a copy of photoshop CS6, if your new computer will accept it. Apple is constantly nagging me to take the free upgrade to mountain lion or whatever the newest animal is. If any one is tempted I advise you not to. Any version of photoshop you already have will become defunct, and you will be forced into monthly payments.
I appreciate all of your answers and will be checking out Affinity and OnOne. I may find myself going back to Adobe for the Lightroom-Photoshop combination-not my first choice but we are forced in that direction when the companies nolonger offer or support their standalone products. The one advantage is automatic updating.
Pixelmator is a great program designed for the MAC.
Apple has put out" Learn Pixelmator 3", an excellent MAC video training app.
I'm not a professional photographer and I believe Photoshop and the others are overkill. I'm guessing that most people use about 5% of what PS is capable of, the rest is for bragging rights.

I have been reasonably well satisfied with CC, but I am not a big Adobe fan. I'd be reluctant to give up LR as it is such a good raw developer and I have so much time sunk into its database.
But if I fell out with the rental method, I'd stick with LR as a standalone and use On One as my pixel editor. The integration with LR is valuable to me.
Minniev mentioned this in his remarks: I'd be reluctant to give up LR
I have so much time sunk into its database. I'm not sure what the answers would have been if you had phrased your question as if you were just beginning to..."
I'm mostly a Mac person. I have a PC laptop, but it's not the choice I pick unless I need to use PC software that I don't have on my Mac. I never cared for iPhotos and don't wish to invest time in the new Photos, something that many seem to hate already, after only a short time.
I chose Corel's AfterShot Pro 2 after reading reviews where a professional said he would choose it to use if he didn't already have years invested in other software. There are links the the reviews in the posts concerning AS Pro2's threads here on the Hog.

As i've posted before, Photos and Photoshop Elements works for me on my Apple products, although I'm not a pro like most of you guys.
Lightroom 5 and 6 are great software that I use on my Mac Pro "Trash Can".

If you want lightroom 5 (lightroom 6 requires osx 10.8 ) then get the cd soon as it is getting scarce.
Adobe were adamant and (quite snotty about lightroom 5 on the phone), they will not sell a full version key (you can download it, you just can't license it). Online support said to try an official reseller of which there were 50 companies listed by adobe. Only one thought he could do it but at an inflated price.
A few of the Amazon sites have it, with Amazon UK the most expensive , due to the strong pound. I eventually bought a copy on amazon.es
Google translate is really good on german and spanish sites.
Thanks fishmaven. I like Corel product and hadn't thought of Aftershot. I will definitely check it out too.
