This morning I opened the patio door blinds and this is what I saw.
It looks like they just want to stretch out and relax. I hope I don't have to buy patio furniture for my little friends.

Maybe they were just enjoying the coolness of the cement blocks or were allowing ants to pick mites from their fur.

I'd call that one, "Blending in". Thanks for sharing. Lovely little critters - unless you have a walnut tree you like to harvest...

Three nice captures. Looks like they are practicing their fur rug imitation and doing a great job.

Depending on the temperature they are cooling down or warming up. When I lived in Jersey the house next door had a ruff stucco type coating and the early morning sun in winter fell on one wall for several hours. The squirrels about 9 to as many as 15 would cling to the wall spread out as far as they could to soak up as much heat as they could. Free energy! In the summer they would sread out like this on the cooler stones of the back yard patio or shaded areas.

I have a few of these critters that do the same thing on the rim of a bird bath. I always thought they were cooling their tummy.

This is an explanation I found.

Most probably, squirrels lie flat in hot weather to cool off. By shifting into this position, they increase the amount of their body’s surface area that is in contact with the ground. If they find the right spot, the ground temperature will be cooler than the surrounding air, allowing a lot of their body’s superficial blood vessels to be closer to the cooler ground.

We raised a squirrel baby one summer that my son had rescued from a cat, and gradually acclimated him/her to going back to the wild. Every so often when Silver saw us sunning in the back yard he would come down from the trees, crawl under the lounge chairs with all 4 feet to the compass, and go to sleep just like your pictures.

Tonyms, thanks for stopping by and I like your idea that they were probably getting some cooling effect. After all, I'm providing Room and Board.
