First post. Trying to get this right?
This beak was not made for cracking seeds.
Shrike
Glad you decided to join in the fun, Jlavern :)
An interesting and pretty bird. Can you tell us what corner of the planet you shot this? You can also go to the "my profile" link at top of page to insert your general, or specific, location under your avatar.
Thanks Linda. I updated my profile as you suggested.
I have enjoyed your posts for some time.
Shot in front yard.
Jlavern thanks for the post and welcome to the Hog!
Not sure but I think this is the first time I've seen the Shrike so really appreciate the image.
Thanks for posting, keep 'em coming! :)
Tom
Wide range all the way to the Gulf. In rural South he is called "Butcher Bird" due to his propensity to make a kill (usually grasshoppers, locusts, lizards, etc.) He catches more than is needed and hangs it out to dry on fences and other spukes until it is needed. Thus 'Butcher Bird'.
Interesting little bird with big attitude. In flight looks like a small Mockingbird due to coloration. They have a distinctive raptor's beak.
Thanks for your welcome and comments, Tom.
Your input is greatly appreciated as I struggle to get the hang of this posting on the Hog site.
John
John never hesitate to post a question - there are a lot of really good and talented people (with the occasional curmudgeon of course) who are more than happy to help.
And thanks for the Shrike information ... as I said I've never seen one before so this was indeed a treat.
Best,
Tom
A little more tail is never a bad thing---
