Great shots on your flickr site! Maybe your lense is the answer to my search.

I'm so darn reluctant to use E-bay, so I'll have to tailor my wants to be under $3000. Plus, for a few hundred or so, Id rather buy new and be secure with my purchase.

I prefer a zoom to essentially carry not more than two lenses on my jaunts.

We're going to be getting into birding, we have some very good Audubon sites close enough. My lack of experience is making me lean toward the 70-200 2.8, but the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED Lens has been recommended as a good bang for the buck and may fill my needs. Too confusing for a new guy. I'm trying to do something before returning to Yellowstone the end of September for probably our last big hiking trip. Contingent upon recuperating from neck surgery shortly. Anyway, I want to be ready! Thanks, again.

Hi Dave,
The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED with a Nikon TC 14eII converter is pretty hard to beat .... Both pieces new... for under $2,000.
I have attached a couple of shots for you to check out....

Yes! I've had some PM's regarding this lens and it is very appealing, but I think for my hiking shots a zoom allows for better reaction with the varied focal lengths available.

Thank you for responding. I do appreciate all the responses I've had!

I'm looking for recommendations to replace a Nikon 55-300 4.5-5.6.

My objective is to acquire something better for low light shots, early morning, early evening wildlife in particular.

Thought of a Nikon 70 or 80-200 f2.8, but my next available focal length is my 150-500 Sig, so that leaves a gap between 200 and 300mm that is desirable to me for those low light shots toward the brush.

D7000, D7100, heavy use of monopod/tripod.

NEW, Nikon 200-500 VR f/5.6 1399 at BH preorder

Your title begs the question if the lens will be for outdoor...
or indoor... wildlife.

If I have low light problems indoors, I turn on some lights! Same thing in the evening!

My heads about twisted over this lens stuff. I really don't want to keep buying, but as long as I feel a void from 100 to 300 for my uses, ......

I'm not "Made of Money" myself. So I go from 10mm up to 600mm with some overlaps.
Like the 55-200mm kit lens, and the 150-600mm Big Tammy.
Or the 10-24mm and the 18-55mm kit lens.
On the far end, I have a 80mm telescope that will cover terrestrial as well as outer space. But so far, I just use it for space.
So that was my "solution".
It can be very confusing.
But I'm happy with where I'm at. ;)

That's the secret, Sonny!

The 55-300 4.5-5.6 is a void for me, so I thought I need something to cover 100 to 300 and a lot of my shooting is animals at early hours. My lenses are listed with my avatar, nothing fancy. I refuse to keep buying lenses. Trying to make a buy that will hold me for a couple years. Yeah, right.

Dave,

I will make a suggestion that might help you decide: Instead of thinking in terms of a lens to fill in your "gap", you perhaps should think in terms of its actual use. To explain my reasoning further, you may only have a gap from 100-300. Its easy to pick a lens to cover that. However, in actual practice, when you are out in the field, I'd bet you would like a little more reach. And switching between a 70-200 and your longer lens isn't a practical solution.

So if you think about the type shots you want, perhaps your big lens covers birding, but you need something with a little less reach but better light gathering. I own the 70-200 2.8 and it works great in low light but is nowhere near ideal for wildlife --seldom is it long enough. It works great with the 1.4 but is still only 280mm. The 80-400 fits your focal length needs but a 300 prime would be better in low light.
