Have an Olympus E Volt 500 which is about 10 years old. Took my granddaughter to shoot some wild horses and when i used anything except Automatic, i got nothing but dark pictures. Tried Aperture priority and Shutter speed priority and got nothing. It worked on Automatic and Scene mode, but that's it. Help me to know what to do!! Thanks.

Check your exposer setiings in auto (ISO, Aperture and shuutter speed) and if you can use manual mode use the same settings.

I'm suspecting broken also.

If you didn't get a manual, check this:

I suggest taking it to a good camera store to have them look at it.

Thanks I also suspected it died but couldn't understand just why it works in auto and scene mode. trying to convince myself not to upgrade but I think this seals the deal! Nikon d7200 is on the list. I'll try the suggestion on the exposures shown in auto and try manual mode to see what happens there. as usual, I appreciate the expert advice I get on this forum.

Take the lens cap off! Sorry, couldn't resist. I hate when gear goes bye bye. Good luck in getting it repaired or replaced. I know when Nikons or Canons get flaky, resetting to factory defaults is always the first suggestion around here. See if that helps. After all, modern cameras are computers and a system restore might just be the ticket.

Buy a replacement, and keep using this one on Auto.

I would have given up on it after 3 years. 10 years with one 8 MP digital camera is amazing but you can still buy the body only on Amazon for $125!

All things considered you have earned the D7200. It is a nice camera that will last another ten years. Don't think twice its alright.

Sounds to me, also, like your camera is "fried." You can chase reason at home, but I wouldn't waste the money on having it evaluated- things (equipment) have progressed so much even in last 2-3 years, your investment in a new camera. You'll *love* D7200 - I shoot with both it and D7000. I like the lack of LowByPass filter and relatively "huge" buffer on 7200 - image quality, when I do *my* "job," is superb, autofocus when used quick and accurate - all benefits even with "marginal" (read: kit) lenses. You *won't* be sorry for "up-dating" to this or similar Canon, etc. They have capabilities you'll probably never need nor use. Remember you will be committing to a "lens series" (the bigger part of your long-term investment in any platform), so if you crave Full Format - or anticipate its need in future- rather investigate the higher-priced spreads of D810, etc. Lenses are generally commensurately higher $ for FF too. Good luck!

Ah, the ol' e-500. My first DSLR. It's time to put er down. If you have a bunch of good 4/3 glass, consider the EM1 with the MMF-3 adapter. If not, it's a great time to evaluate a new system.

Time to say - - "Goodbye, old Norge" (apologies to SNL)
-
Technology has moved so far in the past 10 years, you'd be far better off investing whatever you would have for repair costs - even if it was just for the estimate - - in a new camera - or even a refurb, or one a few years old from E-Bay.
-
You could always leave your old camera on the shelf - - just in case
And when you've not used it for 3 years after getting the replacement - -
Just silently wish it - - Bon Voyage into the dumpster - -

Thank you all for the responses. It has helped me to understand what I need to do and that is to move on and update my equipment. Now for deciding what to buy but I am leaning toward the Nikon D7200 only because I have read some good things about it and it's within budget. But as you can tell, I never jump right into anything without some proper research and thought, so that's what I will do before proceeding. This will be the last camera I buy so I want to do it right. Have a great day!
