Jody, I would like to get a retro shot of a "Jack in theBox"...but I'm sure the one I was weaned on in 1962 in San Diego, California , is long gone. The one I workded at in 71-72 Still had the clown with speaker. They have gotten rid of the clown figure. At 12 midnight on the late shift..folks from the nearby Army post would be wrapped around the building and tell me " Hey, clown...give me a Jumbo Jack with cheese"! WEll at least I earned the $to buy my first SLR!! Did my first wedding with it at 17

Here is the original "Golden Arches" McDonalds in Downey, California, just a few miles from my residence. Except for the prices, it has remained virtually unchanged since 1953.

I think my parents went there when I was only 6 years old.Driving up from San Diego to Vallejo..in 1959. I also think there was a restaurant called Oscars..in Whittier. They had this awesome dee pdish apple pie with vanilla ice cream..stopped there on the return trip. Nice pic! I miss California...but it has changed so much since I lived in Monterey.

I think this retro-McDonald's is TOO cool!
This one is in Ocean City Maryland and I nearly missed it looking for historical buildings on a recent photo trip there!

Naturally, I had to get many shots and play with some of them for effect, too.

the origional oak park illinois franchise is now a museeum and kept its origional design.

The original is in DesPlaines, Il, and is a museum. In the summer there are cars from the 50's parked around it. I took these this morning on the way to work. This is not an operating store, but if I turned aroound, there is a full MickeyD's across the street. Even at 9 am, there were others out there taking pics.

Check the prices on the menu

Didn't Big Boys go into Shoneys in places?

i believe at one time shoneys was a bib boy franchisee but they dropped out. their menus were very similar. and like the big boy chain, are in financial trouble. big boy started a downward spirial when marriot bought them and did nothing with it.

A bad boy?? ;)

Glad you enjoyed it!
I've never seen anything like it before and was really tickled. It would be cool to see more like it popping up now!

(Do you remember what that little guy's name is on the sign? For some reason, I keep going to: "Bob's BigBoy" ... but thinkin' that's an entirely different resturant!??)

Heh heh I'm sure I caused my parents more then one sleepless night. Shocking to hear that I know! :-o :D

I think the original little guy's name was Speedee. :-)

I like that sneaky 15c. sign that squeaked in "originally was".
I wonder how many disappointments there were.

Just to clarify (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_McDonald%27s ):
"In 1953, the McDonald brothers began to franchise their successful restaurant, starting in Phoenix, Arizona and Downey, California; the latter is today the oldest surviving McDonald's restaurant."

"Kroc's first McDonald's restaurant opened in Des Plaines, Illinois, near Chicago, on April 15, 1955 . . . Ray Kroc's first McDonald's was then demolished after many remodels in 1984."
