A lot of the wineries in California plant roses as indicators of soil conditions and possible infestations of their vinyards. The roses are usually the first to detect such conditions. Besides, they are pretty accents to the surroundings.

Hello Kokomo,
Beautiful photo. Beautiful rose. Real reason they plant roses in vineyards is because they look good. What affects roses doesn't affect vines.
Perhaps we could start a thread on urban legends! Any ideas?Loved the pic.

Great photograph, the subtle shades in the rose are complimented by the earth tones behind.
Love it.

Roses are planted mainly to indicate Powdery mildew which is an indication of over watering and roses show it before the grape vines

A lot of good information has been offered as to the reason for roses planted near vineyards. Thanks to everyone for your input. The explanation I gave was offered to me by the Vintner at the winery - - - since then, I've done more research - - - and it seems there are as many theories as roses. Below is an example:

Has a beautiful blush to it :)
(And the bit about them being planted in vineyards and why, was my "something new learned for the day", today. Thanks for that!)

I took these photos in 2009 of a rose in my front yard. It was on the larger rose bush on the right side of my house. I also took a photo of another rose which was on a really small bush on the left side of my house in 2007. The smaller rose bush only had one rose which grew pretty large in comparison to the bush size.
