I recently went on a cruise out of Grenada. Two people had to be air evacuated of the ship for medical reasons. Cost nearly $100,000 each!! They both had trip insurance and were glad for it. Nuf said.

Another patient retired and signed up for an around-the world cruise on the Queen Mary 2. During the first shore excursion in Brazil she fell and suffered a fractured pelvis. Because she had purchased the travel insurance, not only was her $30,000 trip reimbursed, but she was flown on a medevac jet back to Florida for hospitalization and recovery at home. Otherwise she would have lost the cost of the trip and would have spent six weeks recovering in Brazil...

The insurance company should use her in a commercial.

Jerry, we are both in our mid-70's so if we are going out of the country or on a cruise ship, where we are not covered by Medicare or the Supplemental insurance we always take it, and make sure that it includes air evacuation.

The price is outrageous, but if we have $5-6,000 invested in air and cruise tickets, I just think of it as additional cost of the vacation. Within in the US, I don't bother; we're never "that far" from medical facilities.

We always buy "travel insurance" when committing to a cruise or other travel abroad. We prefer an insurance offered by some company other than the cruise line for reasons of prudence. Twice we have had to use it, and while the paperwork was a hassle, it saved us thousands, and allowed us to take the same trip later. We also have a standing insurance to cover return of an RV and medical evacuation while on domestic travel. We have not yet had to use it, but it's cheap and it's there for us.

Do any of you buy Trip Insurance when you travel? My son just bought a train ticket online, and he was asked if he wanted Trip Insurance. He's young and healthy, so the chances of him tripping are remote. I told him to skip it.

Yes, I'm kidding.

I think trip insurance is a good value even if you are 'young and healthy', particularly if traveling out of the country and for those of us who are a little older and may be suffering from various ailments. In the past two years we have had to cancel two trips; one to Ireland and the other a cruise from Venice to Istanbul due to unforeseen medical probs. We have been reimbursed 100% of our complete trip costs.

Now, as far as your son's tripping goes, skipping it sounds like good advice!!!

Do check for coverage if you have a major credit card. My citibank Mastercard platinum covers just about everything I would need. I pay an annual fee for the card but it saves me way more than buying trip Insurance for even one trip. BTW, you must pay for the trip with said card.

We paid around $40,000 for a six week trip. Two weeks into the trip we received a call to return home. My wife's son had cancer and took a turn for the worse. SURE glad we had insurance!

Depending on the trip, insurance should be considered required.

WebMD must be following this site. They sent me an email about how to prevent trips and falls. In the slideshow, I thought slides 2, 3, 6, and 7 were amusing.

We usually get travel insurance for a trip. It depends upon the location, the cost, and how soon we are leaving after we schedule a trip. We used to get insurance through the the travel agent, airline, or online travel company, but we recently started using an online insurance wholesaler. Based on rate comparisons, we are saving a lot of money with the same or better coverage.

I am in no way affiliated with these companies, but highly recommend them. We have used Squaremouth.com twice. ( http://www.squaremouth.com/ ) I've also heard of Insuremytrip.com, but never used them. ( http://www.insuremytrip.com/ )

You key in information about your trip (destination, travel dates, cost of trip, etc), and they provide you with a list of plans from several different insurance companies. They also provide a very concise method of comparing the plans, something that insurance companies love to make confusing. So I recommend giving them a try. I don't think we will ever insure a trip again through a travel agent or with an online travel company.

YES! Maybe not for a train ticket but if you prepay an expensive trip like a cruise or safari its a must. My husband got sick on a cruise a few years ago, nothing serious, but heat related... he was in the infirmary for a few hours with an IV drip and the bill was $1100. Trip insurance paid the whole thing. ..we've used MH Ross and Travelguard. SAVE RECEIPTS!

My brother is an actuary for Western & Southern Life Insurance. He has said that trip insurance is one of the most profitable products the company sells. That is because in reality, they almost NEVER pay a claim. Even though disasters are well publicized and covered by the media, compared to the number of trips and the millions of miles traveled, risk is infinitesimal. Therefore, for the company, when you purchase a policy, it is almost pure profit for them.

I suggest you skip the insurance and buy a Latte with the money...LOL

That's YOUR opinion... My husband and I both have parents in their 90's and the insurance has already paid for itself on one trip

This is a great site with plenty of information and shows rates for different companies: https://tripinsurancestore.com
I always purchase travel insurance for out-of-country trips since Medicare doesn't cover you outside the USA. In almost all cases, you must purchase the insurance within 14 days of your initial trip deposit to cover pre-existing conditions. The web site explains this in great detail.
