I stand behind what I said. You are absolutely correct, Nikon has manufacturing plants in several Asian countries where cameras and lenses are made with parts from Japan.

Send Nikon the serial number and description and see what they say. I would be interested in results

We have been discussing prime Nikkor lenses. I would keep my ears wide open for any real proof that any of them were not made by Nikon or in Japan.

The serial number on this lens is barely visible. It has been pressed on the last black ring of the lens where it attaches to the camera. It has six digits. The OP has not provided us with it or even with a photo of the lens.

The OP was using a 20-35mm Nikkor, not a prime or fixed focal length lens as the used to be called...

The 303xxxx number might be the camera's serial number, and not the lens.

On the' D' lenses I have the serial number is printed on the aperture ring in dark ink, so it is hard to see.

Wow, you are right - very, very hard to see. I had to put it under a strong light and use a magnifying glass. But I did find the number: 208060. Thanks.

I did send an email yesterday to Nikon, but used the S/N from the Exif file. As suggested by another Hog, I finally found it barely visible on the aperture ring: 208060. I'll update my email to Nikon with the correct number and see what they say. Thanks for all the advice.

I didn't include a photo of the lens because it is obviously a Nikon/Nikkor branded lens. And no matter what I did, I would never have gotten a clear picture of the S/N, even if I knew where to look then. Thanks to the member(s) who helped me find it.

Good for you! You found it and it's a nice one, easy to remember.

Right again, the range is 200533-286258. Looks like mine is from an early production run.

Since I started reading this forum about 6 months ago, I upgraded my kit to a refurbished Nikon D610 from Cameta, and found two used Nikon/Nikkor lenses on Ebay - a Nikkor 35-70 f/2.8, and a Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8. To complete my lens set, I just scored an Ebay lens that was listed as Nikon Zoom-Nikkor AF D 20-35 mm F/2.8 AF-D AF. All the markings on the lens confirm this - and it is marked Made in Japan. Yesterday I used it for the first time and when I opened the "info" window on my iMac, the lens comes up as a "Tokina AT-X 235 AF PRO (AF 20-35mm f/2.8)". What's the story here. The lens is clearly marked Nikon/ AF Nikkor. My other Nikkor lenses come up in the Apple Photos info window as Nikon manufactured lenses. Before I contact the seller, is there an explanation for the discrepancy? Thanks.
Since I started reading this forum about 6 months ... (show quote)

The Nikon Zoom-Nikkor AF D 20-35 mm F/2.8 AF-D AF was discontinued in 2001 well prior to the D610
And like jethro779 I too have had my newer camera confuse the brand and model of a Lens.
My guess is because it is an older lens.
There is no way the seller could counterfeit that lens from a Tokina to a Nikon.

With all the advice I've gotten since posting this yesterday, my skepticism about this being a Nikon lens is gone - specifically getting the serial number and matching it to the Nikon published s/n range did it for me. Waiting for Nikon to confirm this is a mere formality now.

You are the one interested in results. I am not.
You should check with Nikon and see what they have to say.

Cosina makes all Japanese manufacturers film cameras & simply re-badges them with the manufactures name

It might make a Nikon film body, that doesn't not make all cameras and Canon was not mentioned, if it was I missed it.
The post was about lenses, If they are not built in Japan the plants are owned by Canon and Nikon. That is still not subcontracted to a different company.
