Very much like the 'N' word.

Do not use it.

I know most people don't think of this, and it's not a big deal in most cases, but as someone with Native American heritage, the 'injun' word is not flattering. I'd just say that Native Americans in that area don't necessarily like their photo taken unless it's a public thing. Just like when in Amish country, you have to be careful about taking people's photo. Ask first, if in doubt.

Yes, except I didn't want to make a big deal over it because I know they didn't mean anything by it. I was just stating that it's a term that people can get upset over if you're not aware.

I should mention that sometimes there are some do-gooder white people that decide on their own that certain terms are offensive, when they're really not. Like, in my sports photography, I have photographed a local team called the Redskins. The logo for the team is a Native American. People have told me that Redskins is racist and admonished me for it.
I mentioned to them that half the kids on the team are Native American. The goalie that the main photo was of, was full-blood Creek Nation. That no one from the school or the team have ever had an issue with the name (for a sports team), as they think that as a team name, it is an honor, not a curse.

It is good to be aware of one's words sometimes though, just to make sure we know how the other guy is going to feel about what we say. I'm comfortable with the people on these forums; and don't feel anyone is overtly racist.

Many aren't free anymore. Plus they have figured out how to make your national senior pass not work.

For example at Mt. Rushmore they don't chage an entry fee. They charge a parking fee.

At the caves (National Parks) they don't charge an entry fee either. They charge a guided tour fee. At least those are half price if you have the senior discount card.

I totally appreciate your comments. I inadvertently said "Indian Reservations." I know and feel strongly that they are "Native Americans" and have the utmost respect for their culture. I'm studying the Sioux nation prior to my visit out there. It is a working trip as well as a few days recreation. I have visited the Amish as well and like them, I will never take a picture without permission.

Indian is an okay term. Someone just wrote injun, which can be taken in a bad way, although I'm confident the person that wrote it didn't mean it that way.

Badlands in July is going to be HOT. Plan for it. I've been 3 times and no matter when you go it is inhospitable.

I'm a little jealous of the trip. I'm wanting to go back, but the wife has other trips planned, so it'll be a couple of years before I get back to SD.

Have to see Custer State Park and the bison, if you're a history buff don't pass up Custer's Last Stand at Big Horn. You can still find cartridges there

By all means, visit Little Bighorn Battlefield, its a fascinating place, but if you see a cartridge or other artifact, DONT TOUCH IT. I believe they would put a guy in jail for that. If you're a history buff, dont miss it.

hi, to me u have more than enough equipment to capture
the MAGICAL BEAUTY of the area....more importantly, unless you are Native American yourself I would be very cautious of where you go and what you photograph on the 'rez,' as you may imagine after hundreds of years of oppression and exploitation shutter bugs/hikers etc need to be careful they do not trample over sacred sites/grounds etc....
if i might, one sight many don't know or think about, if you're are driving west from MN towards the Badlands etc, there is a Marvelous panaromic view as you come up on the Missouri River.... enjoy..i've been blessed to travel and camp there many times....

I live in Eastern SD and we go to the Black Hills quite often. Mt. Rustmore is impressive everytime we go. Take a tour of a cave, I recommend Wind Cave in Custer State Park. There is also the wildlife loop to drive in Custer State park where you will get good pics of buffalo, donkeys, and if you're luck big horn sheep. If you want neat scenery, drive the Needles Highway, unless you get car sick. If you do get car sick, get some dramamine, not many straight roads out there. One thing I have yet to do is climb Harney Peak. Check it out on the web. The view from up there has got to be awesome!! Looks like a good photo opp. for up there. Hope this helps, and have fun!!

Here goes: I am taking my first trip out west in July. I will be photographing scenery, Indian reservations, and of course all the good stuff like Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands. My dilemma: I only have enough to purchase two necessary things - One of which is a new lens and a tripod that is good quality, but light enough for me to handle when shooting outdoors. Budget is a huge concern, but I want to purchase good quality. This is the equipment I have --
Canon T3, Lenses: 18-55mm Kit Lens, Tamron 75-300mm Standard Telephoto, Canon 50mm lens, 58mm Wide Angle lens and 58mm 2x Telephoto lens. (All came with the kit)

Well, everyone, have at it!!!
