I gave my daughter the Canon this past week and I am impressed with some of the pictures she took in our backyard and at the beach. See below; not bad for a truly novice.

I borrowed the P900 from a friend for a week and used it a lot of the time--over 500 photos and was really please with the quality of images. And had several of them printed to 30 x 36 inches and all prints were of excellent quality. And when you can print that big and get sharp image--there is good glass in that camera

And at its longest zoom--using a monopod the images were very sharp

I was very impressed with this camera and will be getting one later in the year

Here is an idea:

www.snapsort.com is a website the compares cameras, Julian. Does a nice job of comparing those two cameras. Gives the P900 the win, however. Take a look. But -- the SX is a lot less money, so might be worth trading off the P900's better features as this will not be your prime camera.

Does the P900 have a HotShoe? Or shoot RAW?? If not those are HUGE drawbacks for some people.

My wife and I shoot Nikons (she shoots a D 5200 with a Sigma 150 to 500 lens, I shoot a D 7100 with a Tamron 150 to 600 lens) but we never leave the house without the SX 50.

It's phenomenal camera for the price. And while your daughter may not be interested in shooting in raw at the moment, at some point in time she will.

I am posting a couple of examples of the SX 50, not trying to hijack a thread, but I think for the money you're getting one heck of a camera for the price.

But not very sharp either. It is not your daughter's mistake. This is the usual IQ produced by this camera. Instead try the Nikon P 600 or P900. The P600 is cheaper of the two with a better reach than the Canon HX 50 and far better Image sharpness. I sold my Canon and bought the Nikon p600. Well worth it.

I would disagree on the sharpness aspect.
Look up "Tony Britton" who has posted some on UHH and I believe he is also on Flickr with AWESOME shots with the Canon!!

I bought my SX-50 refurbished from Canon. I chose it because of the on-going positive comments from other Hoggers. I have been very happy with it. Find the reach excellent and the IQ excellent as well. The VR works very well after a short time of getting used to it. The only criticism I have it that the FUNCT SET wheel and button are not well placed for someone like myself with large hands.

I bought a refurbished SX50 from Canon. Went on a river boat cruise and took a lot of pictures. Not impressed with any of them. While reviewing the photos an icon came up saying unidentifiable subject. Wiped out complete memory card. Boxed that sucker up and sent it to Canon for a refund. Felt like a little plastic toy in my hand. What a piece of junk. Will never be without my Nikon again.

Thanks everyone for your input and comments about the P900. Perhaps I was asking for too much, but the lack of manual focus on both the P900 and the SX-50 is very disappointing. I do a lot of macro and focus-stacking photography and was looking for something lighter and smaller than my DSLR and its Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 lens for traveling,

Focus stacking would be almost impossible since the cameras would focus automatically on the same plane even when using the focus-rail method. Nevertheless, the jury is still out... No decisions at this time.

If you are looking for a manual focus ring, I think the Sony HX400V and HX300 have a manual focus ring but shoot JPEG only. The Fuji HS50EXR may have manual focussing capability and also will shoot RAW.

Irrational reaction to something that MIGHT have been because of a bad card, or at worst a minor issue with the camera!! Have NEVER had that issue with mine, and there are MANY others on UHH that have not had it happen either!!

Might have been Irrational but it happened, nothing wrong with card. Little toy wheel every time you try to adjust something you hit function button, Macro , or flash on or off. Toy Camera (quote)

Hi, just putting in my 2 cents' worth here, now that I've read the 3 pages of replies.
I'm wondering why you're not considering the Canon SX 60, the newer version up from the SX50. I live in your area and found one on "clearance" at the Osprey, FL Walmart for $245. I already had the SX50 and was pleased with it but at that insanely low price I could step up to the 65X zoom on the SX60. Talk about a no-brainer (which is about all I can handle these days! lol).
It also shoots raw and I've been more than happy with the other upgrades from the SX50. It may be something you might want to consider, since you're looking at the newest version of the Nikon P series.
Hope this bit of input helps and hasn't derailed anything (I tend to be good at getting distracted! sheesh!).

I have a canon SX50. What ever the ranges of either camera it is of no concern. The rang is more than can be used. I would have rather had half the range. It is just worthles at the long end.
