I hope you don't really mean you are selling the copyright. That would mean you are giving up your right to sell it again. What you should be including instead is unlimited usage if you want them to be able to do whatever they want with it.

Thanks John, you are quite right.
Before I send the jpeg file I send them an email asking for payment and for them to acknowledge a few terms which includes "limited copyright". They agree not to resell the image in any form, not to use it for commercial purposes and to acknowledge Photogenics.co.nz if used in any publication. They can however print as many copies as they require.
Doesn't always work tho. One of the pics I didn't charge for ended up on a guys website and I only picked it up when I googled his name a few days later and bingo, there was my photo with him claiming he'd taken it on a visit to NZ.
Sent him a shitty email and the photo was taken off but I got no reply to my email. Win some, lose some.

Someone just asked me if I sell any of my photos.
What is involved? I mean, the framing, printing, etc...
How do you do all that and still make a profit?

It appears they have seen the photos and likely have one in mind. I do not sell professionally but thought about this and this is what I would do.
Ask how big they want it printed, mounted and or framed etc. Take all material costs and add 10%. Then take your time and multiply times 4 and decide on an hourly rate for your time (Ex $40.00/hr X 4 = $160.00 per hour you will charge for your time. Or just WAG a profit you want for that photo.
See if this works for you. Is the interested party willing to actually pay for more than materials?

How do you get traffic to your website?
It's not only building it, but getting the traffic is what counts...

You have to be really, really good.

There are people that make a living with photography, and (most) are really good at what they do.

Or you have to be a terrific salesperson, marketer.

You used the word 'Profit' which is the primary goal of ANY Business...

So... if you want to make a Profit you need to make a Business which starts with a Business Plan.

Otherwise, it is a hobby. As a hobby expect it to cost you money.

Oh, That's okay... and if you are able to maker a profit at your passion that is terrific.

I am very happy for you.

So... you have been able to pay for all your gear, a reasonable wage for your time and show a PROFIT...

I was simply implying to the OP that making a PROFIT is much harder than just taking a token sum to prevent folks from taking advantage of you and your developed skills.

I (on occasion) sell photos for anything from $25 - $475 and I sell my time shooting for well over $100/hr. But I do not think I have yet to make a Profit. When I factor what I spend getting to the 'job', my camera, lens(es), bag, filters, software, GPS, Laptop, memory cards, etc. I'm far from making a profit... and I do not care, because I derive great joy in riding in the plane, meeting new people, accomplishing the task, helping (when doing aerial reconnaissance) on a mission, and everything else that my camera brings me to.

LOL, I actually "profited" more when I was using client equipment, because all I had invested was the cloths on my body and the cost of getting to the airfield.
Now I show up with over $10,000 in gear and do volunteer work for, whomever needs the images. (MEMA, FEMA, USAF, Sheriffs, Local LEO's, Attorney's, Brokers...)

I can't say others pay for my passion, because I still cough up a fair amount to support my developed niche in photography. I don't make a profit, but it is nice to supplement the costs with an occasional paid event or sold print.
But I do relate to your joy in receiving compensation for doing something that you enjoy doing.
And I envy your ability to have others pay to support your passion. The only way I can come close to that is to place value on the photos I take for my marketing materials... which indirectly get me handsomely rewarded.

If I take photos of a $4,000,000 commercial building, and I sell the building for a Brokerage fee, the photography helped me make the sale, but I didn't sell the photos, I handed them out (free? heck no; I pay plenty to produce the glossy brochure) for no fee.

I guess I'm a kind of Pimp... and my photos are my whores: I send them out to work and (sometimes) they bring back money.
Ha, Ha, they don't all bring back money; but the ones that do compensate for the ones that do not.

That's why I wouldn't even try to sell any of my photos. Too many excellent photographers out there, with top notch equipment, and way superior software knowledge, than myself. But, I make nice prints, for the others. Don't matt, frame, very rarely stretch a canvas. Have my little niche market, and make a lot more than I would trying to sell my photos. I'm happy, clients are happy.

If you want an easy way to set up a website and have someone else deal with the printing and framing etc, take a look at www.zenfolio.com

I just set my website up through them, feel free to visit to see what you can do with about a week's work.

Whether you go with a photo selling site, or create your own site, you'll have to familiarize yourself with SEO, Search Engine Optimization. You want people looking at your photos, and not the ten million other photographer's pics, on the www.

You could send your files to Bay Photo and have them correct them if needed and include it in your price . Very little work on your part and you will have a professional job done. If your shots are good. The prints done on aluminum are fantastic. Just a thought. Lots of naysayers,I say go for it,you will find out soon if it's not for you
