I think it is both. At least some of the reviews claim it can work on both.

sure it will but only with manual on some nikon bodies . Like some one said ,
Not all bodies have a built in motor . If your shooting non moving subjects your fine .

Wow. More good info. Thanks to all. Had no idea there was so much to know.

I have the same lens 70-300 mm vr . And the write up by Thom hogan
The Garu for of nikon . Says it should cost twice as much for what you get
. The optics are comparable to a $1200 lens . If you would like to see some
Bird shots I have taken with mine , send me your emale , Fred

Paflyer, if the lens you posted a photo of is your lens, it is NOT the VR lens that Bram boy was talking about. It is the older version without VR and requires a focus motor in the camera. It is an ok lens but not nearly as good as the newer lens. I have the D lens myself and it is tolerable at best. It is slow focusing and not always on focus for moving shots because of it's speed. it is a f/4 to f/5.6 f stop so your going to have to either shoot higher iso or very slow shutter speeds in anything but good light. Don't get me wrong, it is a good lens but there is a reason Nikon decided to upgrade it and the new one is way above the older one... The old one retails new for $173 and the new one retails new for $590.. they are both the same f/stop but the newer is an AFS lens and much faster focusing. The lens you show in the photo is the older lens.

You should sell that one and pick up a refurbished 70-300 MM VR
Mine focus instantly . I use back button all the time . Shoot eagles in flight
at 1700 shutter , on nice days and iso 300 or 400 .
