Had a stroke in May and limited ability to travel and thought I'd get into micro (macro) photography. What lens - Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, etc - do you all recommend for my D 610? Budget under $1000. Thanks.

I use the Canon SX-50 for macro, here are a couple of photos with it.

I too suggest you join the macro group here for all the help and conradery you need. I think you have made a very good decision to go macro because subjects to shoot are all around wherever you are and all the year. If weight is a factor you might want to bear this in mind when choosing a lens.

Micro Nikkor 200 f4 is the sharpest lens for, but over $1000!

I recently upgraded my Sigma 150mm macro (Nikon mount) to the newer version which is optically stabilized. I would be willing to sell the non OS version at a reasonable price ($200). If interested, send me an email (hahersh@gmail.com)

I'm very pleased with my Sigma 105mm, but this side of the pond it's 60% of the price of Nikon's equivalent, and just as good. Seems the difference in price stateside is much less...

1st. sorry to hear about your medical issue. I too have had some stuff that has impacted me.

You are in hiding so can only give based on my own experience. I shoot Canon and in agreement that there are lots of great products out there AM made a great list. Macro is one of the specialty areas that I see lots of great used gear. I can buy and try and then if necessary I can re-sell wit out pain.

Macro is a blast and do look at the Macro board there are some great folks. Look at their set-ups and pay attention too the lighting!

Stay as well as you can.

The best macro lens I've ever used is the Tokina 100mm f2.8 ATX.

I would add one more lens to the excellent suggestions you received already. Nikon AF 70-180mm Micro! Yes it's a zoom, no longer made but you may find it second hand. After it's focused, you may zoom in and out but the lens stays in focus. The lens is also sharp.

I'm not greatly into macro but based on general Nikon experience and on observing others --

A --there are degrees of "macroness". At the moderate end of the scale 105mm can keep one busy and entertained. At the extreme end there seems to be a lot of either very expensive gear or less expensive but highly improvised gear.

B---Your D600 has an internal autofocus motor so you can use older AF and AF-D series lenses which will cost a lot less than new 105mm G series.

C---At very close distances moving the camera often works better than either manual or autofocus so a non-AF lens will work just as well and cost a lot less.

D---Folks who get into magnifications greater than 1:1 seem to accumulate all kinds of (to me) wierd gear -- bellows, focus rails, reversing rings, old enlarger lenses. Etc etc.

I don't recommend any of this per se, that there are all manner of directions you can go involving macro photography that range from pretty simple to obsessive megageeky.
