I have a feeder mounted on a Shepherd's Hook and need a Flower to attract the Hummingbirds. I would like a hanging Flower to mount next to the feeder. Any suggestions?
Tom -
I have five feeders and have quite a few hammers using them. All of them have red on them, the birds are attracted to red. One of the feeders is nicknamed he flying saucer. It is flat with a red op and clear bottom. Another one is glass with two ports with red flowers where the feeding ports are. The others are different designs with red accents. A good place to look on the duncraft site they have a large collection of feeders. One thing is feeding, we use a mixture of 1/3 cup of sugar to one cup of water. We were told to use this in place of others on the market. The solution should be changed every three days. Sorry to be so wordy I thought I'd pass along some tips.

They are attracted to red - if your feeder doesn't have something bright red, but is clear, you could use one of the store-bought red hummingbird solutions - otherwise don't expose them to artificial colors they don't need. Hummingbirds love deep-throated flowers that have lots of nectar - honeysuckle, trumpetflowers, and others - ask your local nursery what grows well where you are that will attract hummers - they will be able to offer good advice (a real nursery, not Home Depot...).
Thanks, sounds like i need to go to Southern States and get their advise.

I have read that as the summer warms up a lighter solution is good to provide them with more water - I have always used 1/4 cup sugar to each cup of water and they seem to like it OK.

fuschia`````hangs well, and they are addicted to it.
Per Wiki, hummingbirds are 'tied' to ornithophilous flowers, which seem to be those rich in nectar. For a season, you would need nectar-rich flowers fir sorung, early summer, summer, late summer and fall. If you had enough of them, you might have a mistly ignored feeder.
The correct way to make food is 4 water to 1 sugar .Best to boil to get impurities out. You can always make more than you need and refrigerate.
Thanks everyone for your help, i appreciate your time.
Get a proper feeder from your bird store with the red flowers.
As I'm in the northern states I have my feeder out all year we have one that stays all year.
I use 2 cups water to 1 cup sugar heat in a pot until it's dissolved cool & fill feeder. Keep the feeder clean, clean after each change.
Everyone has a different recipe this one seems to keep them coming back
