I am getting ready for a trip to southern Utah. I want to do some night photography, and am looking for recommendations for ligts to do lightpainting of my foreground of objects in the picture. I plan on shooting thist in Zion and Bryce.

I've got a LED LENSER P7, amazon has it for $36. It has a high and low beam and the width of the beam can be adjusted also. Used it to paint Balanced rock, delicate arch, and a few others. It uses 4 AAA's and is heavy duty. Enjoy your trip.
Since you will be driving to locations, how about your car head lights. One night leaving a meeting, I turned on my head light and there before me, beam filtered..textured.. by a fence was a cemetery... eyes open... shutter opened. Photographed from several angles.
Also consider the Cigarette Lighter plugin 12 V hand held spots, some very bright. With one of those you can selectively paint areas. Example:
The BLACK+DECKER corded 12 volt halogen spotlight puts out up to 1500 lumens of ultra bright halogen beams. About $20

LOL: I do light painting all the time (accidentally) by trying to hand hold the camera with too long an exposure. That said, anylight source can be used for light painting...

I've seen suggestions for shooting fireworks about tapping the tripod during an exposure, so you're on the right track.
You might want to check out Ben Willmore.
http://digitalmastery.com/lightpaintebook/I have not read his book, but I have watched several of his classes on CreativeLive and he is an excellent instructor, so I suspect this carries over to his books. In this one he makes tool recommendations.
