Extreme Range of the Canon SX30 IS
I've had a few Private Messages asking for more information on a camera I've mentioned a few times in various topics I've posted. So today I decided to go out on a hill along the river bottom and hand-hold the camera for four different shots to show the extreme focal ranges this little camera is capable of. Without moving from the spot I was standing on, the first is a macro of a clover blossom, the second is at fully retracted (24mm), the third is the same view at about the equivlant of 50mm, and the last is the same view at the extreme optical zoom of 35x, or about 840mm. I hope this info and these photos answer some of your lingering questions. By the way, you'll have to go with the newer SX40 IS now because the SX30 IS is no longer manufactured. Both the SX30 and SX40 have the same 35x optical zoom--but SX40 has a more powerful processor, more scene options, and 1080 rather than the SX30s 720 HD Wide Screen video. Thanks for enquiring.
Clover Blossom Macro
View: Full 35x or about 849mm
Did you shoot any of these hand held or did you use a tripod?
Man, with clover that size, I'd sure hate to see your skunks in that part of the country. Nice demo. Did you get the tar and feathers yet?
I can't say if I like the lone barn or the one above it the best, but these are wonderful shots.
wow... wish i could get that kind of range with my DSLR... but then, the lenses would have to be the size of sewer pipes! excellent demonstration!

I think he was merely demonstrating the zoom qualities of his point & shoot camera. The last 3 shots were all taken standing on the same spot. Quite remarkable for a P&S, don't you think?
These were all hand-held. The IS is extraordinarily powerful and with a little practise a tripod is seldom needed, except for low-light, slower shutter speed shots. Even at full digital zoom of 145x the IS still locks on and holds and you'll get a good shot at least 50% of the time. I always have handy a tripod, though, usually strapped to my backpack, because out in the bush you're often in heavily shadowed areas and slower shutter speeds are necessary. I almost always shoot in one of the program modes to access the spot evaluation, which often makes all the difference in the world, especially with macro shots. Thanks for enquiring.

Gessman is referring to a local camera club "Photo Contest" subject we began discussing a week or so ago in which the theme (primary object of interest) of the photos has to be something round, circular, globular, etc. I posted 3 or 4 photos asking for opinions on "which one would you submit" and am STILL undecided which one to go with. It's a virtual tie between the Buckeye and the Hoop & Sticks. The contest is to be on the Wed. the 20th. I told Gessman I was tempted to submit both photos at risk of being tarred and feathered by the other members. Attached are the two photos in question. What do you think... is it worth being tarred and feathered?

Buckeye
Hoops & Sticks
Thanks for the information.
I would actually go with the hoops & sticks do to it shows motion along with skill.
The buckeye however is a very, very nice macro coming from a p+s camera. Then again, every review about this camera states "this camera is the first p+s, that is just a s good as a mid grade dslr", including the professionals who had a chance to shoot with it and which some prefer it over a D7000 as it's equal to it's capabilities!
Actually, it's the lack of skill in the hoop and sticks photo is what makes it an interesting shot. The girl re-enactor of the 1840s game missed catching the hoop with her sticks, and is about to get smacked in the face with the hoop. She got a bloody nose out of the mishap, and hollered for a good ten minutes before resuming the game.
And for the record, the Buckeye isn't a macro. It's a full optical zoom. The buckeye was about 15 feet up in the tree.
Thanks for the feedback. Another vote for the hoop and sticks

Ohhh... the theme is "Globular"?
I originally voted for "Hoop n Sticks"... however that would demonstrate something "round"... not "globular" (which implies three-dimensional roundness).
I change my vote.
Buckeye all the way ;)
Come on, tilde, gimme a break, will ya? The theme also included round AND/or circular... So by definition isn't the hoop circular and/or round? Yes, I know, you're a woman and reserve the right to change your mind on a whim and a whisper and I most certainly know better than to try to change your mind back again... unless of course I tell you that you CAN'T change you mind again, in which case I'm sure you'd vote once again for the hoop and sticks. Geesh... you're as bad as both of my first two ex-wives.

Nope. I wouldn't change my mind again.. I just would have followed orders and left it with "Hoop-n-sticks", because changing my mind wouldn't have been an option! LOL
Yeah, right, tilde, like I'd believe a spunky little thing like you would take orders!!! I've had more than my share of knuckle bumps on my poor ol' head from trying to tell a woman what to do, and even though I may be a bit slow on the uptake, I DO learn, and I wouldn't even DREAM of trying to sway your opinion one way or the other! You want the Buckeye, you'll get the Buckeye, and we'll just leave the poor girl to blead to death from a busted nose.
Did ya ever see a finer lookin' ~?
