The saga continues with my husband's PC, running Windows 8. There is a problem with either the charger, or the computer itself, as it will not recharge the battery. I have bought a new battery, and it will not re-charge in the computer, and I don't want to put any more money into the PC. We are going to dump the whole thing, but I need to get his pictures copied out of Lightroom 5 onto an external hard drive. I have limited battery life in which to accomplish this, as I have been trying for about 45 minutes and have not been able to figure it out, as I use only Mac.

Here is what I've tried. I have tried to export the photos out of Lightroom 5 onto the external drive. It will not work, as the external hard drive does not show as an option for the exporting location. (The computer is recognizing it, but Lightroom does not)

I was also going to try moving it within Lightroom, but again, Lightroom does not see the external drive.

I have also tried dragging the pictures to the external drive, (in Windows not Lightroom) but all it does is establish a link, not move the pictures.

I have also tried just burning them to a CD, but could not find a way to do more than one date at a time, as it won't let me burn unopened pictures.

On top of all of this, I have VERY LIMITED battery life left on the new battery I installed, so I'm not comfortable playing around trying other things that might not work. I have even bought an external drive reader to pull the hard drive out of the PC, but I haven't tried that, as I'm not sure I can read the hard drive on a Mac.

Any help is appreciated.

If the photos are really important to you, take the PC and the external hard drive to Best Buy and get the Geek Squad to do the work for you, or find a friend with the knowledge. If the objective is to just salvage photos from the PC that you're gonna throw away, leave Lightroom out of the equation.

1. the unit you are plugging into your laptop is not a charger. It is a simple power converter use to change house current from A/C to the required DC voltage for your laptop.

2. Try removing the battery and then plugging into that power converter to the laptop. Your laptop should now be able to power up and run all day.

3. this would mean that you now have two perfectly good, uncharged batteries and a bad internal laptop battery charging electronics.

4. If the laptop will not power up then your power converter is bad and needs to be replaced.
You must match the replacement with the old unit to be certain that the output DC voltage is correct.

So take the charger/power convertor with you to the store and the BestBuy Associate or store clerk should be able to match the charger to a replacement unit. There's numerous laptop charger/power convertor models available on Amazon as well. I would be leery of buying any laptop charger on EBay though, since you could be buying another burned out unit and have little to no recourse or warranty.

It's correct though, that the battery doesn't need to be in your laptop to power up the unit if it is connected to a charger/power convertor that functions properly.

If you have to ask how to move the Lightroom data, then I'd suggest that you take both the external hard drive and the laptop with its power supply to a more experienced person and get them to copy the necessary files etc. to the external drive.
They should be copied and not moved. That way your will always have a fall back place to go should the file transfer not work properly.

Do not export the pics. Find the folders and drag to ext drive. If it makes a link..then make sure u copy stuff from right hand explorer pane not the left pane.

Dont forget to copy the catalog

Sounds like a nightmare. I know you said you did not want to sink any more money into the computer. I fully get that and have been there too (more than once). But you may have to get a new charger or try running it with the charger and no battery (my HP LapTop can work that way).

Just a stab at it. You do realize your actual image files are in one (or more) folders, and Lightrooms Library Database is in a different folder (or folders). Are your images and the Lr 5 data even on the same HDD or root (higher order) folder now? It should be fairly easy to Move, Copy, archive, burn your images and Lr 5 data. If you really can not locate or interact with the folders you need, something may be wrong with Windows. Unfortunately Win 8 & 8.1 are an unknown beast to me.

Burning to CDs or DVDs ROMs will be slow and very time consuming. So your best bet is to archive everything to an External Hard Drive (or two). Today 1T ~$80>, 2T ~$120>. Windows formatting for JPGs and TIFs and PSDs and DNGs should be readable with a MAC, but I am not sure about actual RAW files from a PC or if a Windows Lr database is readable with a MAC version of Lr. Yet, MAC formatted image files are usually not readable with a PC.

I have Lr 4 on my LapTop but I don't really use it, I'm a Ps CS6 fan. Sop I am no Lr expert, but I do know PCs and Windows well in general. Good luck.

Having suggested that you may need to have someone with more WIN 8 experience perform the copy procedure to your external hard drive, here is a tip as to where those images and files are located:

C:\Users\Warren\Pictures\2002\Xmas Photos

The above is where lightroom will place that data when it is allowed free rein during installation. the text "Warren" should be the name that your husband uses on his laptop.

Good luck . . .

Sorry . . but the last entries are specific to my set up and will be different on your system. Here is what needs to be copied:

C:\Users\"Your husband's name"\Pictures\

All of the files and folders below the above copy request are those necessary to be copied to the external drive.

If you still don't feel comfortable with this, take the complete system and the external hard drive to an expert.

Maybe she doesn't know what the charger looks like, Like part of the power cord?

If the battery won't charge with the charger plugged into the computer and the battery installed it is the charger and not the battery that needed replaced. Best buy has 39 universal chargers for less than $25.00. that you can get.
One caveat. it could also be a problem in the computer between the receptacle on the computer and the battery. I had that problem with a Compaq once and the cost of the fix was prohibitive. Not likely, but another possibility.

Add the battery icon on your taskbar to show what the status is such as % charged, charging, or running off the battery.

That way you can hover the mouse over the icon and see what the status is quickly. For example mine says: 97% available, plugged in, not charging.

Or you can use a voltmeter if you have one handy.

It sounds like you have an open in your AC adaptor though which can be mended with some cutters, a soldering iron, and some electrical tape; but the easiest method is to buy a replacement like jethro recommended. Amazon delivers fairly quickly if Best Buy is too far away.

Also Best Buy will match Amazon's price on identical items.

Here's the link to the Amazon listings for replacement charger/power supply for laptops. There are different models for different laptops.

The above suggestions are on target, but I have one additional comment: if you use Windows to copy the files to an external drive, make sure you also copy the LR catalog; otherwise you'll lose all your edits unless you have told LR to generate .xmp files. Check www.lightroomqueen.com for Victoria's article on this type of move.

Another solution is to use this connection system between computers and the included software. It can drag and drop whole catalogs as well as individual files from one machine to another.

To fully copy/clone a drive and all of it's contents, "ACRONIS 2015" and "ACRONIS Disk Manager" are great solution as well if you go with a USB enclosure for the original drive and it's photo files and Directories.

If the external drive reader you mention is an empty housing with a USB cable, then just pull the hard drive out of the laptop and put it inside. It's really easy, the drive is usually under a cover on the bottom of the laptop, with a few screws holding it in place. The enclosure will probably have two screws holding it's cover on. Remove them and slide the cover off. Then the drive can be inserted. Just plug it into your Mac, my MacBook Pro has no problem reading the drive from my Sony Vaio.

Be sure to unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery. Then touch bare metal on the computer to discharge static electricity before touching the drive. You can also buy a wrist strap to discharge the static.

Your charging problem may be with the DC power jack on the the laptop. That's the receptacle that the AC adapter plugs into.

I bought a replacement from Amazon for $14.95. Very easy to install on the Sony. I've replaced others that required soldering, which is a little more difficult. Google "dc power jack repair" and you may be able to find a local place to have it done. There are also several places you can UPS it to that will do it for around $75.00.

If your external drive reader isn't an enclosure, you can get one from Amazon or Fry's for $8.00 - $30.00. There are lots of how to videos online explaining how to do these things.

Good luck, Tom

Thank you, I have little to no knowledge of Windows 8. It's like a maze to me. When I was able to find the folders, it gave me very limited options, and I can't remember if burn was one of them.

Hmm... based on little or no knowledge...

Wouldn't it be easier to ask someone who knows what they are doing---a trusted friend perhaps? I think you had the right idea by soliciting our advice on this forum, but you really need someone to physically help you. On here, you'll get a lot of good advice, but unless you have hours and hours of battery life, you won't be able to apply all of it. ha ha... Sorry, don't mean to make light of the situation you are in. Some might say my advice is not helpful, but if you think about it, it does make more sense in a lot of ways. Good luck.
