Good thread to ask this question. What affects file size? Pixels are one factor, but is it the colors? For example, the data for my camera is always 4016 x 6016 (24 megapixels), but the mb varies from shot to shot. Clearly my old 10 mp creates smaller megabytes and I assume because less data, but it varies so much even with the same pixel count I must be missing something. Thanks
Image detail. You will see a difference between a shot of a night sky, and a shot of a stand of trees with lots of leaves, or a city scape with all sorts of detail. My D800 lossless compressed raw files go from as small as 39mb to 51mb.
