Processing 50 MP images

I was curious as to the limit, if any, of pixels that a basic (Picasa) photo editing software package can handle.

My question is can, Picasa or any other basic photo editing software tool handle an image coming from a Canon 5DS camera?

thanks.

The size of the file that can be processed is usually limited by the hardware available rather than the software (not having tried every piece of software I can't guarantee that but so far no problems).
Some software in certain functions (e.g. CS6 when saving a large file for the web) will report that the large file may cause a problem but it still goes on and does the job.
We regularly process files from Phase One 60mp backs at 150mb without problems with a couple of freebies during workshops.

There is a quick way to find out - create a pano image with your current camera/software. The result will likely be bigger than 50 mp - then try to edit it with Picasa - FWIW - I have edited a 300mp pano with Lightroom, Photoshop, On1, Topaz, Nik - no issues other than slower operation.

Photoshop Elements has a maximum size of 30,000 x 30,000 px. Photoshop supports 300,000 x 300,000. Picasa used to have a 50mp limit. Not sure if they expanded that.

My full res TIFF files are 207 MP and none of my editing programs have a problem with it (I don't use Picasa).

I suspect it would have more to do with the computer than the software.

I think you mean megabytes not megapixels. Without stitching a pano, the largest image out of a camera is the Leaf with the 80 mp back.

Then there is this 570mp camera:

Good thread to ask this question. What affects file size? Pixels are one factor, but is it the colors? For example, the data for my camera is always 4016 x 6016 (24 megapixels), but the mb varies from shot to shot. Clearly my old 10 mp creates smaller megabytes and I assume because less data, but it varies so much even with the same pixel count I must be missing something. Thanks

TIFF files with multiple layers can be huge.

Image detail. You will see a difference between a shot of a night sky, and a shot of a stand of trees with lots of leaves, or a city scape with all sorts of detail. My D800 lossless compressed raw files go from as small as 39mb to 51mb.

I assume that the camera comes with the DPP disc that other Canon cameras include in the box. Unless they changed the program, If DPP can handle 50mp picasa probably can also.

You're right Gene51. Don't know what I was thinking.
