They should be, however I have seen a few [pilots] try to land at eight foot agl.

Well, carrier landing should best be at the deck altitude.
Same for mountain airfields.

I wonder if the people felt the heat from the engines.
Back in days of old (60's up) after 4 in the Air Force I was in the TANG 134thARG located in Knoxville, TN (McGhee Tyson Air Base. We were one of several air refueling groups in the US and during that time one of the groups was in Rhein Mein constantly. We just rotated around as scheduled. We used to refuel fighters about half-way from US to Germany across the ocean. Amazing to see a bunch ease up behind you and station off to the right, then move in one at a time to refuel and then form up on the left. When the squadron was fueled they would thank us and haul butt. We (those of us who weren't crew-I was radio and radar maintenance) would go back and lay on the boom operators back and watch out his window while he refueled the fighters. Here you are 20 feet from all of the known airborne weaponry in the world and you just hope the pilot is having a good day. All you can see is a chrome reflecting shield on his helment. What's amazing is the little "eye" on the nose of the rockets slung under the wings of the fighters. They are continuously searching frantically for anything with a heat source and you just hope the pilot doesn't go "postal" on us. Ahhh - the Good Ole Days, eh?
I agree. That is why I stay away from air shows and car races.

Close enough to make them duck Jerry. Wouldn't be surprised if they did feel some heat. :-D
