Even an ugly person can be made to look very attractive in the right settings, as well as a beautiful person may look terrible with the wrong settings. The artist that understands this
make a "silk purse from a sow's ear". Some of the subjects painted by the great masters were not the most beautiful people, but they brought out the beauty with creative use of light.
