There's lots of questions about going from 4x6 to 5x7 for example, how to do this without losing some of the original pic. What with computers and pixel juggling it seems that you could just resize from one to the other and voila, it's done. Doesn't work that way. I've tried and tried and always lose something in the transition.

Finally figured out that the only way to do it is to crop your original to a specific ratio and not let the printer interface do it. Then what you see on the monitor is what you get in the final print. Otherwise you'll be surprised by what comes out of the printer. If there's another way to do it, please advise. Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing your have 2:3 camera and why 4x6 look fine and 5x7 gets chopped and so would 8x10. It's best that you do the crop on your computer so you can choose what gets cut. I have had some where I did not want anything cropped without loosing the shot. I simply print with 8x12. If you plan to frame it, you need different matt.

If you try those squishing programs, some or good some are crap.

Now that you understand what it means to play with a 2:3 camera and you may want to stay withing the classic 5x7 8x10 etc sizes, plan your shots with some extra room knowing you need to crop before going to the printer.

You can't do 5x7 from a 4x6 image without cropping the image or distorting it to fit. In a size similar to 5x7, you might consider 6x9, which will fit all of a 4x6 image without cropping or distorting and will fit nicely and easily on a letter-size sheet of inkjet photo print paper.

Another option is borders and uncropped image. I'd much rather have borders on my print than squishing the image to make it fit on the paper.

I hope I am not changing the subject or starting a topic.

Frequently I send pix to an "organization" news paper; the Ed likes my pix, but, she says "the are the wrong size." she says she needs 760 DPI (dots per square inch). Do any of you HOGS know how to adjust DPI on pix or how to figure out what DPI my camera is producing ???? Alyn

I have Photoshop CS6 and after a learning phase, can change sizes easily using the Image size and Canvas size settings. This also allows me to change the spacings between the photo and the border. Several videos are available on u-tube for help.

Two completely different aspect ratios. One does not translate to the other and if you distort the photo with free transform in Photoshop it will be distorted.

Tell your printer you want to print 5 x7 but load 8x10 or 8.5x11 printing paper. In my Epson this terrible waste of paper saves the whole image. With a paper cutter, I can then trim or save what I want.

I wonder if he is really old school and really means 760 Pixels on the long side. I shoot for local rag and he wants them 2000 on the long side but many of mine end up on the front page and need a larger image.

This has nothing to do with the camera unless you are shooting very small jpg and the file is too small. Since I use Lightroom and raw(large), i simply export what he wants and the master pic, stays untouched.
