One of the guys I work with is nearing 65 and is being bombarded with Medicare supplement offers. He asked me if I had any advice but I couldn’t help as I’m not there yet. Anyone have any advice or input they’d like to share that I might be able to help him avoid any pitfalls? Thanks.

I went with plan F. No Ded no Co-pay, but it's more expensive.

Yeah, I was referred to the National or State Medicare sites & my questions about coverage were beyond the scope of even the those workers. I would have needed a much more informed person as my questions involved UCR rates & dual coverage questions, both of which were beyond the abilities of most employees or volunteers. The people couldn't refer me to the right personnel to answer my queries either. Seems the claims processing units don't handle questions prior to a service, just afterwards. Which is the reason I went elsewhere.... That said, for general info, they are OK, just don't ask detailed questions

General volunteers may not have the answers but Senior Centers can direct you to organizations that can answer your questions. Here we have the Council on Aging. They hold regular class type seminars for those that are entering Medicare, with people in the know and give detailed information and you can set up a private appointment at another time. This is not sponsored by a particular insurance company, but State or County personal.

I use AARP supplemental Plan F. Cost $185.00 a month, but it picks up the entire 20% that Medicare doesn't. One thing though, if Medicare doesn't pay their portion, AARP won't pay anything. Good Luck.

As I have no idea of what the 'pushed' supplements are for I suggest he look into foods, supplements etc that will help with those conditions he has. The medical profession all get their info, and directions, from the chemical drug manufacturers by one means or another and that means they're after his money primarily. Doctors' main concerns are getting and retaining sick,to some degree, customers. (Calling us 'patients' makes us feel better.)

If your colleague wants good health info I suggest shopping round the naturopathic people and researching any gleanings on the internet. It will take a bit of sorting the wheat from the chaff in both places but in the end it will come down to making informed decisions and he may find it's not that difficult.

The most important bit is for us to talk to each other. It's amazing how few people are actually in good nick and conversations on this topic are more welcome than most people realize. I wish you good luck and plenty of persistance.
