Luckily. I got this shot before it flew away a few seconds later. Used 896mm focal length. Hand held.

Canon 7D Mk2 - Canon 100-400 II - Canon 1.4x III - 1/400 - f/10 - ISO @ 400. Distance was about 4 feet.

Nice attempt, how to improve the next try. For sharp hand held shots the minimum shutter speed should be at or greater than focal length. Your shot would of been better if shot at 1/1000 sec. Or faster. This can be done by shooting Av. Increase ISO and making any adjustments to squire that 1/1000 sec shutter speed. Bang! Sharper image.

...or simply shoot in T mode, set the ISO to get the dof you want.

Excellent Regis, thanks for sharing. I can't wait until I get my 7DMarkII and the 100-400. I'll get the 1x4 also. I'm looking for examples and you gave me encouragement to get the extender.

Wow. You do magic with this tamron 150-600mm lens.

If they don't pose for me, I will swat them.

Thank you, Earnest. I am trying to show that the Canon/Lens/Extender combo will take good close-up insect shots.

Thank you, Karl. I know all that. Increase the ISO and shutter speed increases and you will have more noise which will negate the sharpness of the photo. The Canon 7D Mk2 runs into noise problems with higher ISO settings, so your advice will not work well in my situation.

Thank you, Hunter Lou. You will like the Canon 7D Mk2/100-400 II/1.4x III combination for it's sharpness.
