"Outdoor Photography" favors Canon???

An observation of the photographs reproduced in Outdoor Photography monthly contests (where equipment is identified) reveal a significantly greater number of captures taken with Canon cameras. It was my impression that Nikon and Canon were very competitive in landscape photography equipment and fairly equal in sales. Are there simply more Canon landscape photographers or is there a journalistic bias here?

My guess would be that, despite your impression of Nikon/Canon sale, there are more Canons being used overall then Nikons.

But, and I am a Canon user, I think that Nikon is used more for landscape by landscape pros. Sports, it is Canon hands down. But for landscape, Nikon JPEG algorithms just seem to produce a quicker color turn around.

My anecdotal evidence is there must be something about geography to the camera choice ... I run a distance road race about once a month all over the US. As a Canon shooter I tend to pay attention to the hired guns along the course way and their lenses and cameras. In Chicago last Saturday morning it was all Nikon. From my informal survey, they tend to be Nikon in the photographer for hire at road races. But, it was very obvious in Hawaii a few years ago and a race in north Georgia last November when all the cameras I noticed were Canon. I don't keep notes on every race about the photographers, but I have noticed it tends to be all of one or the other and rarely some form of a mixture.

If the technical specs are posted, you'll notice on 500px that Canon seems to be most frequent, but maybe in a 40 v 35 v everyone else ratio. I'd say its more where you source your information or observations rather than one brand being more popular or more appropriate for a certain type of photography even disregarding all those white lenses at major sporting events ....

BTW I ran 10-miles in 93:15 finishing at the 50-yard line in Soldier Field and I was more focused on not tripping on a busy course or passing out as the temps went up than I was on paying attention to cameras ... I easily could have missed someone shooting something other than Nikon ....

Advice for foot race. After you cross the start, wait 10 seconds before you hit start on your watch. Do the same after the finish. That way you do not have a finish photo of you looking at your watch!

Pros favor Canon.
Some shoot indoors, some shoot outdoors!!

Except in Montana, where extremely reliable sources report 30 nikon sales for every Canon sold!!
They also sell a lot more pointy white hoods there too!!!

dsmeltz - I'd rather have an accurate time, but I've gotten better at pressing stop with head up and hands near hip than the face down finish line crossing ....

I've used Nikon's a lot longer than I care to admit. Only other cameras I've had in 35mm were one Minolta (totally manual) and a Voighlander. Never owned a Canon. I doubt getting a Canon would make me a better photographer and if I'd never used a Nikon, I doubt getting one would make me a better photographer. I believe that I could go out and buy any DSLR and no one would ever be able to tell which camera I took the photo's with. This is nothing more that the Ford/Chevy debate. Looking for the brand of camera to make better photo's with is just not that good an idea. Buy the camera that feels good in your hands or, one you already have lenses for or, that you can afford. If you simply like the sound of one name over the other, get it! A camera in the end is simply a tool, it'll only do what you can do with it, no more!

I think you pretty much nailed it. I use Nikon, I have a cousin that does it for a living (studio) he uses Canon. When I started upgrading I went with Nikon. Why? It fit my hands, took good pictures and was on sale!

when I look at that magazine, I seem to see lots of Nikon being shot. I don't think it really matters. I shoot canon, I just started with it in 2005 and like the brand. nothing against Nikon, but now I have several lenses and I will continue with canon. just me. deb
