To all the great people that responded to my question on the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 lens...........I made the decision and purchased it. Everyone presented lots of suggestion and comments to help with that decision. I did the research on the alternate suggested lens and the "IS" was a factor but after reading everything I decided to purchase this 24-70 lens. I have a very good Manfrotto tripod and uses it when I know the shutter speed is crying for help. Some of your comments brought a smile - example having a heavy lens makes one respondent know the lens is not a toy (my thinking too) and another person willing to marry their lens as the love it so much. All in all as they say, I really appreciated everyone input. After I use is for a few months, guess I will be planning a "honeymoon". Hey, got to have some humor in life. Georgeretired.

GR,
Someone else posted that the new lens doesn't have IS. I went to the Canon site last night & confirmed it. The new lens (EF 24-70 f2.8L II USM) uses an updated lens construction, but no IS. List price is $3,000.00!!! I haven't seen any first hand pics, but for the money, I'll stick with my L I.
Someone else also mentioned the battery grip. Excellent idea! I bought the Vello models for both my 5D MK II and 50D & they make a HUGE difference in handling with large lenses. They also provide secondary controls for shots taken with a vertical hold (shutter and function buttons). The vello costs ~1/3 of the Canon version.
PD
I'm shooting with a 50D as well and have thought the grip would be helpful. Also wondered about the weight stress on the camera/lens mount when on the tripod. any thoughts there?
GW,
My gut reaction is that the stress would be significant, long term, if left on the tripod for extended periods. I use a Manfrotto with ball head & a separate plate that attaches to the camera (or grip) bottom. A lot of other brands have this feature as well.
If I plan on using the tripod for the whole day, I leave the plate on the camera and detach from the tripod after I get the shot.
PD
i also have concerns about the battery grip on a tripod//my solution to this is use the lens mounting ring// or if the lens does not have one///realizing that it is a pain in the but//i do remove the battery grip if the camera is to be on the tripod for more than just a few shots
ken
the cannon 24-70 will cost you over two thousand dollors from bh
