Seems to me you bought a used camera off of ebay and you're now upset that Nikon isn't going to fix it for free. Maybe you shouldn't be mad at Nikon and examine better purchasing choices in the future.

Another thing to consider and I don't know if it still holds true, but I will assume it does, is that when a camera is taken in for repair they don't just jump to the broken part and slap it back together. It goes through what can generally be called a "complete service". The camera is cleaned, lubed, checked and calibrated. Any and all worn or malfunctioning parts are replaced unless it is a major or non serviceable part. In short what you get back is a truly refurbished unit. They don't open up a camera without checking EVERYTHING, it is standard practice from all I've ever understood. That is why the "set rate" may seem high. For the labor involved, it is only prudent and the only way to guarantee a properly functioning camera. Yes, you DO have to weigh the costs, but you also need to understand what's involved. I once looked into getting a Nikon F2 repaired and found out the "parts" that mine needed would be included in the price of servicing. It wasn't my main camera and money was tight but I was glad to find out what I would get for the price.

Buying stuff for cheap on questionable sites and rant about the cost of repair being higher than the purchase price?

Why did you purchase a broken camera in the first place?

The op said he bought a great camera on ebay after he got the quote from Nikon. Slow down and do a little better job of reading before comenting. - Dave

What did you buy? You said you received it in great condition; why does it need to be repaired? Paid only $112.50? Is the camera even worth $200? What Nikon may be doing is trying to prevent going through the cost of tearing it down to find out what's wrong with it and then being told to forget it because the camera is not worth the $$. They don't want to left holding a worthless camera. Can't expect them to work for free. A local camera repair shop wouldn't do that. Of course I'm just theorizing here due to the limited amount of background information.

Last Thursday I took my Nikon DSLR to Nikon in Melville Long Island for a repair estimate. After the lady at the desk took all the information she told me it would cost $200 plus dollars for a repair. I told her that I was told that estimates were given at no cost. She agreed and I left. When I received my mail yesterday (Friday) I had a letter from Nikon advising me that it would cost $200 plus dollars to repair the camera. It has become very apparent that Nikon does not provide free estimates even though they say they do. The letter quoted the $200 plus price that she tried to sell me at the service desk. I purchased the same DSLR from a vendor at E-Bay two weeks ago. I received the camera in great condition, with a DX zoom lens, a 2GB compact Flash card, Nikon camera strap, two batteries and a charger for $112.50. Who in their right mind would pay Nikon $200 plus dollars just to repair the camera. Nikon should wake up and smell the roses. They are milking the public with their ludicrous repair policies. I was wondering what you folks think about this. Am I crazy or what?

You don't say what model it is, but If you purchased a replacement Nikon DSLR for only $112,50 with a lens and accessories than it was obviously a pretty old body. The fact that Nikon wanted to charge $200 to repair your camera is quite reasonable. Clearly your damaged camera is no longer worth very much if you were able to find a replacement on line with accessories for so little. However, Nikon's estimate is based on parts and fixed hourly labor charges and has nothing to do with the value of your camera. You have just learned what most people already knew, that very old equipment regardless of whether its a camera or a microwave, or a flat screen TV, is generally not worth repairing. You also seem confused by the meaning of a free estimate, and perhaps the word estimate itself. The costs of repairs will be $200 plus as you indicated. Was there an additional cost for the estimate? If not, the estimate was free.

May be the OP should return the camera as the Ebayer was selling to the OP a defective camera

The OP has two different cameras. The one purchased on line for $112.50 is in good working order and is a replacement for the one that received the $200 estimate from Nikon.

This is one of the stupidest whiny posts I've read on UHH in a while. Toss your crappy old broken down camera and get a life.

it appears the OP believes repair costs should be less than the resale value of an old and used product and anything higher is a ripoff. I guess if he could get a used product in good working order for only $15 that should be the cap on the repair cost for it. He needs a reality check. Hes a newbie on this site. My guess is after the lambasting he's gotten in this thread its not likely we'll hear from him for a while.

Edit: Out of curiosity I looked at all of his 16 posts from a few different threads. Most of them have to do with the same general subject about dissatisfaction with Canon and Nikon. The rest are about some ancient equipment he's owned.

I do understand what free estimate means, however I did not get one. While I was at the counter with my D70s the woman told me that it would cost over $200 to repair the camera. I asked her to detemine what was wrong with the camera and I would decide if I would get it repaired. What they did was hold onto the camera for 5 days and sent me a letter that it would cost over $200, which i s apparently their flat rate to repair the camera. With respect to the other D70s that I purchased on E-Bay, I purchased it before I ever drove to Nikon which is 8 minutes from my house. I own many Nikons from Nikormat, F5,D100, D1x, and on and on. Most of my equipment was purchased new. I worked in Manhattan for 34 years, so I am well aware what things cost, having dealt personally with B&H, Adorama, 47th St. camera, and Ken Hansen. I basically got the impression that Nikon has a set price to repair different camera models and that is in my opinion wrong. With respect to the value of the D70s, it is a lot less than the flat rate to repair. My belief is that they cater to Professionals and not amateur photographers which in my opinion accounts for the rather high prices
