Hi Hoggers
Just would like a few thoughts on changing my 50D to a 5D full frame what are the advantages and is it really worth the extra cash?.

I'm contemplating the same thing. Will the Full framedness offset the 300 fewer Megapixels??? Both bodies are about the same vintage.

A few questions which only you can answer. Does your current camera meet all your needs? Do you print larger than 8X10? How important is 3+grand to you? Will your current lenses do justice to the pro level camera? Is your desire for the new gear just GAS? Do you sell your work? Will your wife never let you off the hook for "pissing away" all that cash? These are just a few things to make your decision more challenging. Good luck-whatever you decide to do.

I have shoot with a 40D and 5D.
High ISO performance is better with a 5D as is the viewfinder.
That's about it as it the 40D has a better focussing system, higher frame rate and a bigger buffer. Even a 70D (which I own) has a better performance than the 5D.

If you were going for a 5DIII then that is a whole differnt story. I have friends who own one and they love it. It has a great all round performance.

Audi, if youre actually talking about a 5Dmkl, yes, the 5 is a better camera but you are mostly going sideways. The 50 is a way better action cameda and if you shoot small birds/nature you would be better with the 50. I'm sure the 5 is a better landscape and snap-shooter though.
Audi, unless you can't afford it, I'd be looking at something newer!! Good luck. ;-)

Changing a 50D to a 5D would be quite a major undertaking - might be more practical to simply buy a 5D!

Only you can decide if it is worth the extra money. However if image quality is a high priority, a full frame camera definitely offers better IQ - partly because it is a larger sensor with larger pixels and better low light/high ISO performance, it is enlarged less to get to a similar sized print, and the full frame lenses are usually of greater quality than the smaller format lenses. The weather sealing is usually up to professional standards, though to be honest I am not sure about the 5D.

Yes, there is a price to be paid - FF costs more, is bigger, heavier and many of the lenses are white. :)

Personally, I chose FX over DX because I wanted something as close to the 35mm film I use a lot of the time. I like making images that I can then print, usually the smallest is 12x18 inches. Thus, my personal justification. In film work, the larger the original format, the better quality print one gets.

If all you are going to be doing is emailing images to friends, you won't need to purchase an FX format. If you have, even a small, desire to see your photos printed and framed, then FX is a great way to start that process.

I always say, if you want it, get it. Some experts say don't even consider going FF, and others say don't even consider crop sensor. There are loads of articles available online. Here's one -

I have a 12.8 mp 5d that I am considering selling. The sensor was just professionally cleaned and has a relatively low shutter count. I have not decided what I want for it, but if you are interested let me know. One owner. Reason for sale, I went to a 6d and am considering adding another other body with a better focusing system.

It might be a good alternative.

Just an alternative to get into a full frame sensor at a reasonable cost.

A full frame with a 50mm f1.4 prime might change your world, then on the other hand, hard too know without knowing what your up too.
