I'd suggest you PM MT Shooter. He'll know whether Yellowstone would be accessible that early in the Spring. There is a Wildlife Park-Bear Cub Rescue Park near Mr. Rushmore- some decent wildlife photos of wolves, big cats, etc. The black bear cubs are a hoot too. It's commercial, but IMHO worth a stop.

Bear Country USA, Rapid City--I agree, it's a fun opportunity to photograph the wildlife. Part of the park is drive-thru, the other part is smaller confines for small animals and the bear cubs. They even had a white buffalo when I was there.

If you do Crazy Horse, it's best saved for a night visit when you can use your photog skills on the light show. That's an interesting sight to finish off a drive on the Wildlife Loop in late afternoon. And the Loop is logical if you leave Rushmore and travel the Iron mountain Highway--it brings you right down to the east side of Custer where you can grab a good meal at Dakota Cowboy and stay the night.

Thank you for the suggestion!

Hacksaw, Please post pics if you can I am going later in the month and gives me an idea what I may see and the shooting conditions. Thanks, Gary

I will try. I'll still be learning my new camera and Lightroom software (although I hope to learn a lot before I go).

Oh that would be very cool. Anyone remember an old movie starring Charles Bronson chasing a white buffalo? Really dating myself.

If you go, let me know if the spirit buffalo is still there.

It was nice to meet you yesterday when you stopped into the store. I hope you are not snowed-in down in Yellowstone. Unfortunately you can never depend on the weather to co-operate up here!
Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Thanks! I enjoyed visiting with you too. The Puffin Pad is proving very useful. Had a minor fender/bender with a Big Horn Sheep yesterday about 20 miles outside the park....the sheep is okay and only minor damage to my car.

You said something which really hit home for me when we were talking about our travels; memories fade over time. I was thinking about that during my drive to the Yellowstone area; it's not always about getting the perfect shot as the imperfect ones will still serve to help recall the experience one had at time.

I have the D7100 and it is a great camera. I also have a D800, but the D7100 and the Nikon 28-300mm was my first setup. It is a great vacation combination. The 28-300mm is nice and sharp. I did also purchase a Tamron 10-24mm for wide angle shots. Now that I have the D800, the Tamron stays on the D7100 and there is NEVER any lens changing on vacation. One of the great things about the 28-300mm is that I am able to crop quite a bit with photos taken with it. I have one shot of a small black spec in the ocean and I've been able to crop it quite close.....it's the head of a seal. I think you could get the camera and this lens for just about your budget. Check with KEH or B&H. Ask if you'd have to pay tax.

I have, however, recently purchased the 70-200mm f2.8, so I'm not sure how that will figure in on vacation. It's a bit more cumbersome than the 28-300mm.

I only brought two lenses with me; Nikor 28mm 2.8 and the Tamron 16-300. I haven't used the Nikor yet and I may not as the Tamron is proving to be quite flexible for what I need.

I didn't realize that you had posted this last December. Just wondering....why did you buy the Nikkor 28mm, which works out to be 42mm on your crop lens?

I bought it because when I received my D7200, my Tamron lens was still a couple weeks out so I went to a local camera shop and bought it used. It's a great lens and it was inexpensive.

I'm going to Yellowstone for a week starting May 22 this year. The last 10 days have been rain in the park.....the next 10 also predict rain! This past Saturday.....it SNOWED in most of the park! Looks like May in Yellowstone is like March in Illinois!?
