I am a David Busch fan and have used his tome's for all of my Canon bodies, so maybe you could try your local Barns & Noble for his book. If all else fails I would purchase the dummies book. I have several of them for different applications and they are quite good.

You might also check on ebay. They often have used ones (which I have also bought) and alternative sellers. Good luck, and let us know how it all comes out with your new gear.

Just found this on ebay; OOPS, just noticed, it's out of stock too. Wow, you certainly have a popular camera!

The last time the brown truck showed up at my house there was a a cute chick driving it. Keep the camera and lens. Go to Barnes & Noble and buy one of the Nikon D5300 Digital guides & Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson and read them. Then go out and take pictures. Enjoy the ride.

After reading 100 posts on UHH I have taken a leap of faith and await my new Nikon d5300 and tamron 28-270 to be delivered tomorrow by the cute guy in the brown shorts. Or did I bite off more than I can chew and should I send it back unopened and stick with the Brownie? I'm scared...

If you had read 200 posts, you might have gone to micro four thirds. Next time, read more.

As a RANK AMATEUR and new to the site it is very comforting to know there is a resource I can go to for info on new products, techniques, tutorials, etc. , by knowledgeable humans who respond immediately to queries.

So where are you going for that quality of information?

Nikon sets the default sharpening for in camera JPEG files really low at level 3. Nikon expert, Ken Rockwell, recommends setting the sharpening in the picture controls - standard, neutral, vivid, monochrome to level 6.

Congratulations! You'll be just fine. If you can, get a copy of Brian Peterson's, "Understanding Exposure 3rd. Edition." I is a great book for people new to DSLR photography. Lynda.com and KelbyOne.com are subscription services that offer "complete courses" and tutorials on "every" subject involved in photography and the software most people use. It is a great way to learn. The other thing I would recommend is to make images everyday and try each day to learn something new about your camera, techniques and post processing software. You can't hurt anything because they are just pixels. It will improve as time goes on. Good luck.

It's nice to see encouraging words. Your posting is anything but helpful. With the attitude you have why bother to comment?

Photography is a great hobby, and hobbies are important for ones mental and physical health. David Busch's guide books are good, but I think that for a beginner the "Digital Field Guide" series is better. Amazon or Barnes and Nobel should have the guide for your camera. It's not just a manual. It's also a basic photography guide geared to your camera, and it contains a glossary of photographic terms.

The main thing to remember is that it takes time to be good so be patient and enjoy the learning process. Be yourself and shoot whatever interests you. Most people here are nice and helpful. A few aren't. Listen to the former, and ignore the latter.
