Came by post 2 days ago, and let me tell you, it′s the handiest item in my camera bag! No longer have to screw filters on and off, or bayonet the hood, don′t need a tripod (tape the camera to a post), sticks a flash diffuser in place, keeps my hat from blowing off - just a multitude of uses. I′ll never go back to masking or duct tape again. Thanks for letting me share my excitement over my latest acquisition ... excuse me, have to go take the cat off the wall.

I have used gaffers tape for over twenty-five years---handiest tape ever. Here is a great site to find out all about the tape and to order just about any color and any size.

I'll have to check it out- I always thought duct tape was gaffer's tape.

The biggest difference is gaffers tape leaves no residue. Also gaffers tape can be removed and put back in place. Sometimes you can get away with a different location. I use it a lot for taping down the cords to my strobe lights when I use them at an event.

Gaffers tape... amazing stuff.

whenever I photograph a parade, there used to be remnants of Duct tape on trees and sign posts along the route. Then I discovered Gaffers tape and you never know I was there.

:-P

how about that blue "painters tape" from 3M... seems like it's stickiness is less than other tape and is designed to be removed after painting. Anybody use this stuff?

3M Blue is great for painting and not much else. Besides the above mentioned tapes, there is Gorilla Tape made by the Gorilla Glue people. Super-sticky and twice as tough as duct tape, it would surely hold a cat to the wall if needed.

Where can I get gaffers tape? I bought a roll years ago and used it up quickly because it was so great. Can't seem to locate it now. I remember it was expensive but it was well worth it. Any suggestions ?

Guitar Centers always have it, or any store that serves the stage industry.

Thanks to all for the Heads up and the alternatives. Now I have choices for different applications. Cats and all.

OH NO!

Gaffers tape is what duct tape hopes to be when it grows up. It's the "6 million dollar man" of tapes... Stronger, faster, and better in every way (won't leave goo behind when you remove it, either... don't know if you can say the same thing about Steve Austin).

I've even used gaffer tape to temporarily repair a horse's hoof!

You can find gaffers tape at more pro-oriented camera stores, including the big online retailers. But keep an eye out. Several years ago I found it at a local hardware store at half the usual price ($10 per large roll) and stocked up. Haven't needed to buy any more since.
