I ordered the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM from
B & H on Friday.
I had the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM in my cart for a few days and when I finally made the decision to order, it was OUT OF STOCK! So I ordered the non L. Now I am having second thoughts, thinking I should have waited for the L or ordered from somewhere else.
I am a newbie so I reasoned that the non L would be fine. But I want quality....See??? I still can't decide...
Anyone have this non L lens and who can provide feedback on it's performance? Thanks
There is really no comparison between the two lens. The "L" Series lens is far superior in quality all around.
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is an okay lens for $500.00. Go for the "L" Series lens and you won't regret it!

i started out with the non L lens and was very happy with it.
When i gave my son the 40D he needed a lense to be able to use it.
So I ordered the 70-300 L for myself and gave him the other one.
As i see it - it was a win,win situation.
You will not be sorry with either way you chose to go.
I have the lens in question in addition some L lenses. I read a review of the lens by Ken Rockwell praising its` merits . Check it out .

It is in stock at Amazon, if you still want one. Only 1(one) left.

I have the non-L version (because of price), and although I am sure there is a large quality difference, I use this lens a lot and have taken some very nice photos with it. I wish I could afford Canon's price for their L lenses, but I have to work within my budget. I have been very satisfied with the non-L version that I have. I also have an "entry level" camera body, but again, I work with what I have. The best equipment will only take the photo that the photographer takes.
Have been using a 75-300mm version for 6 years now and have been very happy. Have borrowed the 100-400mm L series and for my photos can see little difference. Use a Canon T2i which is a little slow but does the job. Think you will like the new 70-300mm.

Of course if I had the money I would buy the new L series lens and match it with my desired 5DmkIII, if only I had $5,000 hanging around.

So often the difference between non-pro lenses and pro/prosummer lenses is the build quality. If you are a casual shooter, save your money for yet another desired lens like a macro or ultra wide-angle and you will be happy with the results you get from the lens you ordered. If you use the equipment a lot and bang it around on hikes, rafting trips etc. get the pro series L lens.
had the 70-300 non L lens for a few days before I returned it to B&H. I waited for the L lens and I'm glad I did. What a great difference. You'll get much crisper images from the L lens ... no question about it. My best, J. Goffe
